Breaded and Fried Onion Slices are a very tasty and appetizing recipe, thin slices golden on the outside with a soft and crispy texture inside.
I have always seen the classic onion rings online that I wanted to prepare too, but having large red Tropea onions available, I preferred to prepare slices, bread them, and fry them like cutlets!
It’s a really inviting dish with a sweet taste that can be served as an appetizer or side dish, and if the slices are as big as these, they can be served as a vegetarian main course accompanied by other ingredients.
If, like me, you love onions, try this really tasty version, you can also use white onions.

Ingredients for Breaded and Fried Onion Slices
- 1 large red onion
- 2/3 cup Breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup Grated Grana Padano
- 1 sprig Basil
- 1 Large egg
- to taste Salt
- to taste Peanut oil

Preparation for Breaded and Fried Onion Slices
Peel the onion, wash it, and then cut it into slices about 0.4 inches thick, being careful not to let the rings come out, try to keep the slices intact.
In a small bowl, prepare the breading by mixing the breadcrumbs well with the grated Grana, salt, and chopped basil.Take another small bowl and beat the egg, finally adding a pinch of salt.
Proceed to bread the onion slices by first passing them in the beaten egg and then in the breading, pressing to adhere the breading well on both sides.In a pan, pour some peanut oil (excellent for frying because it is resistant to high temperatures like olive oil), when the oil is hot, add the breaded onion slices, let them brown for about 2-3 minutes per side, the flame should not be too high.
Once cooked, place them on a paper towel to absorb the excess oil.
Serve the onion slices hot or cold!
Tips and Variations
For this recipe, I recommend Tropea onions which are quite sweet, but if you can’t find them, use any available ones.
