Tuna and mayonnaise onigiri are some of Japan’s most famous foods! I’m sure you’ve seen it at least once in your life in an animated series or even better in person at a sushi restaurant. It originated in the land of the rising sun and is used as an out-of-home food in a bento box along with other dishes.

Ingredients
- 1 cup sushi rice or short grain rice
- 1 3/4 cup water
- Half avocado
- 1 canned tuna
- to taste soy sauce
- to taste mayonnaise
- 1 sheet nori seaweed
- to taste black sesame seeds
- to taste wasabi
- 2 tablespoons sushi seasoning
Steps
Place the rice in a large bowl and rinse it repeatedly under running water
When the water runs clear, drain the rice and let it rest for at least 20 minutes
Pour the rice into a pot and cover with water
Ensure the rice is evenly spread across the bottom of the pot
Place the pot on the stove and cover with a lid
Turn the heat to high and once it begins boiling, reduce the heat to the lowest setting
Set a timer for 15 minutes and always keep the lid on
After the time is up, turn off the heat and let the rice rest for another 10 minutes in the pot with the lid on
Meanwhile, cut the avocado into cubes
Make the sauce by mixing the tuna with mayonnaise and soy sauce
From the nori seaweed sheet, cut strips 1 inch wide and 3 inches long
After the 10 minutes of resting, transfer the rice to a large bowl, season with sushi seasoning, and mix. The rice should be sticky and warm
Take the onigiri mold, place a layer of rice, season with the mayonnaise and tuna filling, add a few avocado cubes, a hint of wasabi, and cover with another layer of rice
Close the mold with the lid, press, remove the onigiri, and place the nori seaweed strip on the base to cover both sides of the triangle
Finish by sprinkling some sesame seeds on top of the onigiri
Tip!
For the filling, you can also use raw tuna or salmon as long as it’s been frozen to eliminate parasites.
