Greek Salad with Breme Onion

The Greek salad with Breme onion is a typical summer recipe, a rich, healthy, tasty, and nutritious unique dish, also delicious as an appetizer. The Greek salad with Breme onion gathers Mediterranean products and flavors, and since there isn’t a specific recipe, this time for this new version I chose to prepare it my way: cubed feta cheese, cucumbers, black olives, a special, red, crunchy, and slightly sweet onion, and to complete it all, a fresh tzatziki sauce. Served with pita bread or with rye bread croutons, the Greek salad with Breme onion will become your favorite in the summer season.

  • Cuisine: Greek
  • Seasonality: Summer

Ingredients

If served as a main course, the indicated quantities are suitable for two people. If served as an appetizer, it will be enough for four people.

The dish does not require the use of salt because feta is usually very flavorful. If needed for your taste, feel free to add it.

  • 7 oz cubed feta cheese
  • 2 cucumbers
  • to taste black olives (I chose Taggiasca olives)
  • to taste Breme onion (or red onion)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • to taste tzatziki sauce

Tools

  • 1 Bamboo cutting board
  • 1 Kitchen knife
  • 1 Serving tray

Steps

  • Prepare the tzatziki sauce following the instructions you find HERE. Peel the cucumber (you can keep the peel if you prefer), cut it in half, remove the seeds, and slice it. Thinly slice the Breme onion (I used a quarter here, but it depends on how much you like onion). Gather the prepared vegetables in a serving dish. Add the cubed feta and black olives (ideally, you would use Greek Kalamata black olives, but I had Taggiasca olives at home and chose to use those). Dress with the oil, gently mix, then add a few tablespoons of tzatziki sauce. Serve the Greek salad with Breme onions immediately with a small bowl of sauce so that diners can add more as desired.

Curiosity

The Breme onion is an Italian excellence, a Slow Food Presidium produced in the province of Pavia. It is sweet, crunchy, fragrant, has a purplish-red color, is flattened in shape, and above all, is large: on average, it weighs between 1.32 and 1.76 lbs but can reach up to 2.2 lbs. The one I received as a gift weighed 1.14 lbs (one of the “smaller ones”).

The Breme onion has many properties: it lowers levels of bad cholesterol and has a beneficial effect on the arteries, it is rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, selenium, iodine, zinc, and magnesium.
