Sailor-style mussels are a typical dish of Mediterranean cuisine, very tasty and highly appreciated.
A humble and simple dish as it was prepared on sailors’ boats as a quick meal.
It is made with just a few ingredients, garlic, parsley, and extra virgin olive oil.
The cleaning of the mussels, also known as muscles, is crucial, very important to remove the byssus and encrustations.
They are mollusks rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals, containing very few calories, which is why they are recommended for those following a low-calorie diet.
Inside the mussel, there is the mollusk which can be bright red, thus female, or yellow, thus male. Both are considered natural flavorings, as they give a unique sea taste to any fish dish.
Ideal to serve as an appetizer.

Steps for preparing sailor-style mussels
To prepare the delicious sailor-style mussels, we begin with the cleaning process. Remove the byssus, i.e., all the filaments present, especially those connected to the mollusks, and with the help of a metal sponge or a knife, the possible encrustations. Select them by removing those that are open or broken.
Then wash them several times under running water. I recommend doing this in a large bowl so you can see when the water becomes clear, a sign of perfect cleanliness.
Once the procedure is complete, in a frying pan pour half a finger of extra virgin olive oil and heat before adding the garlic cloves. Sauté over low heat for two to three minutes at most; they must not burn, so pay close attention. Then remove them and add the mussels. Cover the pan, turn up the heat to the maximum, and cook until they have completely opened. It takes about 5 minutes. Once opened, add fresh chopped parsley, plate, and serve with lemon slices and … enjoy!

Storage and notes
Sailor-style mussels can be stored in the fridge for one day. When fresh, store them in a bowl covered with a cloth or dampened paper towel, always in the fridge.
I recommend consuming sailor-style mussels with a squeeze of lemon.
