Ingredients for the Puff Pastry Swirl
In this savory pie, I used fontina cheese, but you can easily replace it with mild provolone or pizza mozzarella, which is drier than regular mozzarella.
I used one round puff pastry sheet and ½ roll of rectangular puff pastry. With the leftovers, you could make quick puff pastry bites or tomato and parmesan snacks.
- 1 roll puff pastry (round)
- 1 roll puff pastry (rectangular)
- 3.5 oz cooked ham (thinly sliced)
- 4.2 oz cooked ham (in a single slice)
- 4.2 oz fontina cheese
- 1 zucchini
- Grana Padano cheese, grated (for sprinkling)
- salt
- black pepper
Tools
- 1 Cake Pan with a diameter of 10-11 inches
- 1 Grater with large holes
- 1 Mandoline
- 1 Fork
- 1 Pizza Cutter
- 1 Pan
Preparation of the Puff Pastry Swirl
Cut the fontina into julienne strips using a grater with large holes.
Cut the slices of cooked ham into small cubes and sauté them in a small non-stick pan without any seasoning until they are golden.
Trim the zucchini, wash it, pat it dry with paper towels, and slice it thinly with a mandoline. Then cut each slice in half lengthwise.
Line a 10-11 inch diameter cake pan with the round puff pastry sheet, keeping it on the parchment paper provided in the package. Prick the bottom with the tines of a fork and fold the edges of the pastry inward to create a sort of rim.
Place the slices of cooked ham on the bottom.
Add the julienne fontina; season with salt and pepper to taste.
Now unroll the rectangular puff pastry sheet and cut it into strips about ¾ inch wide using a pizza cutter.
Fold each strip in half, then fold the resulting strand in half again and twist it on itself as shown in the photograph.
Prepare more twists in the same way and place them inside the cake pan starting from the center and moving outward to the edge.
Then place the half zucchini slices upright (with the colored side facing up) leaning them against the puff pastry twists.
Finally, fill the spaces of the puff pastry swirl with the cubes of cooked ham and sprinkle everything with the grated cheese.
Bake the tasty puff pastry swirl in a preheated static oven at 356°F for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy! Paola
