Candied Orange Peels

Have you ever tried making candied orange peels at home? They are super easy and perfect for decorating cakes, semifreddos, or ice creams. To be honest… I eat them as is, plain, because they are really delicious. Let’s not forget the ‘waste’ aspect. In fact, this recipe allows us to use the citrus peel that we would otherwise throw away.

And if you love oranges, I recommend trying also:

candied orange peels
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Cheap
  • Rest time: 5 Hours
  • Preparation time: 15 Minutes
  • Cooking methods: Stovetop
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: Autumn, Winter

Ingredients for Candied Orange Peels

  • 5.3 oz orange peels
  • 5.3 oz sugar
  • water
  • granulated sugar

Tools

  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Saucepan
  • 1 Skillet
  • 1 Baking Tray
  • Parchment Paper
  • 1 Plate

Preparation of Candied Orange Peels

  • With a small knife, remove the excess white part from the peels. I recommend using only organic untreated oranges because the peel of others is not edible and cannot be eaten.

  • Then cut them into sticks and dip them, gradually, into a bowl filled with water to lose some bitterness. You can leave them in the water for a few hours.

  • After this time, fill a saucepan with water and bring it to a boil. Meanwhile, drain the peels.

  • When the water boils, dip in the peels and cook them for five minutes.

  • Drain them, put more water in the saucepan, bring it to a boil, and repeat the same process, cooking the peels again for another three minutes. This way they will completely lose their bitter taste.

Drain them again and pat them dry with kitchen paper.

  • Now, in a skillet, pour the sugar, add 5 oz of water, and bring it to the heat.

  • When the sugar has dissolved, add the orange peels.

  • Cook them until they are caramelized and all the sugar syrup has dried up. Stir from time to time.

  • Then turn off the heat and transfer the orange peels onto a baking tray (or a tray) lined with parchment paper, keeping them spaced apart to prevent sticking.

  • Leave them for a few hours, then roll them in granulated sugar and place them on a tray. The candied orange peels are ready to be enjoyed or used in other preparations. I store them in a tin box. Enjoy! Paola
