The most frightening holiday of the year is coming, and don’t you want to make a Halloween savory pie resembling the typical Jack o’ lantern? To be honest, it was supposed to look monstrous, but upon closer inspection, it just seems like a funny face to me. In any case, it’s perfect to serve on the night of witches and it’s also very easy to make. How about trying it?

Preparation of the Halloween Savory Pie
First, unroll a sheet of puff pastry, keeping it on the sheet of parchment paper provided in the package. Then, with a small knife, cut out the eyes, nose, and mouth of the typical pumpkin. If you’re artistically skilled, you can do it freehand. As for me, I’m totally unartistic, so I first drew everything on cardboard. I cut out the various parts, placed them on the puff pastry, and only then did I cut it. Naturally, you can draw the nose, mouth, and eyes however you prefer.
Remove the cut-out pastry parts and place the sheet in the refrigerator while proceeding with the preparation of the savory pie. This step is important because, this way, the puff pastry doesn’t soften at room temperature and retains its shape more easily when we flip it onto the filling.
Unroll the second sheet of puff pastry and place it inside a baking pan with a diameter of 10/11 inches, without removing it from the parchment paper. Prick the bottom with the tines of a fork.
Make a first layer of cooked ham, cover with cheese slices, make a second layer of ham and a second layer of cheese. Then place ham slices where the openings for the eyes, nose, and mouth will be to prevent the cheese from oozing out during baking.
Remove the decorated pastry sheet from the refrigerator, flip it over onto the baking pan, remove the parchment paper it was on, and fold the excess pastry inward, sealing it with the bottom layer.
Cut two strips from the puff pastry scraps. Form two small rolls and place them inside the circles of the eyes.
Cut two slices from a green olive and use them to form the iris. Place two capers in the center to give the impression of a pupil.
Form two more pastry rolls and place them at the base of the eye.
Cut a small triangle and put it in the center of the nose.
Finally, brush the Halloween savory pie with milk and sprinkle poppy seeds here and there. I put a bit more on the lower tooth of the mouth to give the idea of a cavity… crazy stuff!
Bake the Halloween savory pie in a preheated static oven at 356°F for 35 minutes. Let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your Halloween! Paola
