Puff pastry donuts with Nutella, the smart little treat that saves any occasion.
Do you know those moments when you suddenly crave something sweet, but you neither have the time nor the will to start kneading? Or when guests arrive at the last minute and you want to offer something special, yet simple? Puff pastry donuts with Nutella are born for these situations!
This recipe is a little kitchen trick: few ingredients (two, to be precise!), a rapid procedure, and a result that wins everyone over at the first bite. All you need is one roll of puff pastry and a bit of Nutella, and in less than half an hour, you have ready fragrant, golden, crunchy donuts on the outside with a soft and creamy heart. Perfect for delicious breakfasts, afternoon snacks, sweet buffets, or even to accompany a coffee when you want to pamper yourself a bit.
The beauty of this recipe is that it is versatile and customizable: you can enrich it with chopped hazelnuts, powdered sugar, a brush of milk and sugar before baking for a caramelized effect, or change the filling with pistachio cream, jam, peanut butter, and much more. And if you have an air fryer, you can cook them there too for an even quicker version without turning on the oven!
They’re the perfect idea to make with kids, who will enjoy cutting the pastry and filling the donuts. And the aroma that spreads in the kitchen? A true magic!

Ingredients for puff pastry donuts with Nutella:
- 1 roll rectangular puff pastry
- 2 tablespoons Nutella (generous)
- 2 tablespoons chopped hazelnuts
- as needed whole milk
- as needed brown sugar (optional)
- as needed chopped hazelnuts (for decoration)
Tools for puff pastry donuts with Nutella:
- 1 Baking sheet non-stick
- 1 Spatula
- 1 Knife
Preparation for puff pastry donuts with Nutella:
Unroll the puff pastry on a cutting board and spread the Nutella on one half of the pastry using a spoon or spatula (if the Nutella is too thick, you can melt it in the microwave or in a bain-marie, making it more fluid and easier to work with), sprinkle the chopped hazelnuts over the Nutella.
Fold the plain puff pastry half over the Nutella half and press lightly with your hands to make it uniform.
Now divide the pastry into 8 strips using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife; if you prefer, you can make more strips to create more donuts.
Take a strip of pastry and twist it onto itself, sealing it well to form a donut, place it on a non-stick baking sheet or lined with parchment paper, repeat with all other strips.
Brush the surface with whole milk and sprinkle with brown sugar (if desired) and chopped hazelnuts.
For a shinier and more golden result, brush the donuts with an egg yolk mixed with a splash of milk before baking them.
Bake in a preheated oven at 356°F for 10/15 minutes, until golden.
Once baked, sprinkle with more chopped hazelnuts.
Let them cool before consuming, you can store your donuts in an airtight container for a couple of days, although we assure you they will be gone much sooner!
DON’T MISS:
Can I use a spread other than Nutella?
Yes! You can use any hazelnut spread, pistachio cream, white chocolate, or even jam if you prefer a fruitier version.
Can they be cooked in an air fryer?
Absolutely! Cook them at 356°F for about 8-10 minutes, until golden. Watch the cooking time: every air fryer is different.
Can I prepare them in advance?
It’s best to enjoy them freshly made to maintain crispiness, but you can prepare them and store them in an airtight container for 1 day. If you like, you can reheat them for a few minutes before serving.
Can I freeze them?
You can freeze them raw, already formed, and cook directly from frozen, adding a few minutes to the cooking time.
