Air Fryer Baked Mussels

Air Fryer Baked Mussels are a classic and timeless seafood appetizer, present in our fish-based menus. For cooking, I used my kitchen ally: the air fryer. Thanks to it, in a few minutes, I achieved a dish with perfect and even cooking, without having to preheat…something I would have had to do if I used the traditional oven.

After being thoroughly washed and cleaned, the Air Fryer Baked Mussels are opened in a pot and then filled with a mixture of breadcrumbs, grated Grana Padano, chopped parsley, salt, pepper, and a pinch of grated lemon peel.

The Air Fryer Baked Mussels successfully opened my Christmas Eve dinner, followed by Pasta with Swordfish and Eggplants in Air Fryer and stuffed calamari, a recipe I will soon publish on the blog. But now let’s see how to prepare them in the air fryer.

Steps

How to prepare baked mussels in an air fryer

  • First, wash the mussels thoroughly under running water, removing as much encrustation and filaments as possible. Remove the filament protruding, known as the beard, by pulling it off with a firm movement.

  • Once cleaned, open them in a pot with a lid over high heat, it will take five minutes. As soon as you see the mussels open, turn off the heat and let them cool for a few minutes.

  • Open them halfway and detach from the shell, it will be easier to take them out to eat. If they are small, you can place two in each shell.

  • In a bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, Grana Padano, parsley, salt, pepper, a bit of grated lemon zest, and mix everything

  • Add the olive oil and mix again

  • Fill the shells with the mixture and arrange them on a baking tray, you can also use disposable aluminum ones in the fryer, drizzle them with a little olive oil

  • Insert the tray in the air fryer and cook at 340°F for 10 minutes, raise to 355°F and continue for 5 minutes or until the surface is golden. Keep in mind that they should not dry out, so do not start at too high a temperature, also to avoid the filling “exploding” during cooking

  • The mussels are ready, serve them hot

Storage of baked mussels in the air fryer

You can prepare baked mussels in the air fryer in advance and bake them at the moment. For storing the baked mussels, it’s recommended to keep them in the refrigerator for a maximum of 2 days.

If during the opening phase in the pot, not all the mussels open, discard them and do not force them open, they might not be fresh.
