The ham and cheese rolls are ready in 10 minutes and are very easy to make. You will need a few simple ingredients: cooked ham and cheese, then we will make a very simple batter without eggs with flour and cold water; dip them in breadcrumbs and you’re done! Everyone will like these rolls, they are crispy on the outside and super melty inside.
The recipe for ham and cheese rolls is ideal for lunch, dinner, or as an appetizer. And because they are very quick to make, they are perfect even when you don’t know what to cook and have only a few minutes to spare. They can be cooked in an air fryer or, by increasing the cooking time, in the oven: all directions are below.

Ingredients
- 8 slices cooked ham (or 4 if they are quite thick)
- 4 oz melting cheese (or: provola, scamorza)
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup very cold water (preferably sparkling)
- as needed breadcrumbs
- as needed salt
- as needed extra virgin olive oil

FOR THE GLUTEN FREE VERSION READ THE “TIPS FOR YOU” BELOW ⬇️
First, we prepare the batter. In a bowl, sift the flour and add the cold water and a pinch of salt, then mix well with a hand whisk until you get a smooth batter without lumps. Meanwhile, cut the cheese into pieces at least 3/4 inch thick and about 1 1/2 inches long.
Open a slice of cooked ham and place another on top. N.B.: if they are quite thick slices, you can also use just one. Place the cheese on top, fold the sides first, then roll up the ham to form a roll. Repeat the process with the remaining slices of ham and cheese to make all the rolls.
Meanwhile, pour the breadcrumbs with a pinch of salt onto a plate. Preheat the air fryer for 3 minutes at 390°F or the oven in fan mode until it reaches a temperature of 390°F.
Pass the ham and cheese rolls first in the batter and then in the breadcrumbs, being careful to ensure it adheres well on all edges. At this point, add a spray of EVO oil and cook them in a hot air fryer at 390°F for 10 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking. Or in a hot fan oven at 390°F for 15-20 minutes.
Serve while still hot and melty. Enjoy your meal!
Tips for you
✔ GLUTEN FREE VERSION: For the batter, use 5.3 oz of rice flour, 3.5 oz of cold water, and a pinch of salt, and dip them in gluten-free breadcrumbs.
✔ You can replace cooked ham with: speck, prosciutto, or bresaola (in this case be careful with salt, I recommend not adding it to the breadcrumbs).
✔ For this recipe, it’s necessary to cook the ham and cheese rolls directly in the basket of the air fryer without parchment paper: this way they will cook thanks to the air that passes 360 degrees from bottom to top, ensuring ideal air frying.
✔ I recommend using a BBQ mesh to place directly in the non-stick basket of your air fryer: the mesh protects the non-stick surface of the basket (which will remain like new) and allows the food to cook evenly, letting air pass 360 degrees. You can find it on Amazon by clicking here.
