I’ll explain how to cook perfect round mini pizzas in an air fryer: they will be as delicious as those from the bakery! The recipe is very simple and requires just a few basic ingredients. With some tricks, you will achieve perfect mini pizzas even at the bottom. Remember that they don’t need to be golden or charred like those from the oven to be considered “well-cooked”: in this case, no miracles will happen. Most air fryers only have a top heating element, so they will never be golden at the bottom. However, I assure you that with this recipe, you will get perfectly cooked mini pizzas both on top and at the bottom!
The recipe for round mini pizzas in an air fryer is really easy; all we need to do is make a very simple dough and let it rise until it doubles. I assure you that forming the dough balls will be a piece of cake! We will then top them just like those from the bakery: tomato sauce (strictly raw) and mozzarella or cheese to add at the end. Follow the steps, and once you try it, it will become your favorite recipe! You can also bake them in the oven, increasing the temperature and baking time, all cooking instructions are provided below.
- Difficulty: Easy
- Cost: Cheap
- Rest time: 3 Hours
- Preparation time: 15 Minutes
- Portions: 8
- Cooking methods: Air Frying
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All Seasons
Ingredients
- 4 cups pizza flour or all-purpose flour
- 1 1/4 cups room temperature water
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp dry yeast (or 10 g fresh)
- 1 cup tomato puree
- as needed extra virgin olive oil
- as needed salt
- 10.5 oz mozzarella or cheese
Tools
- Air Fryer
Steps
In a bowl, pour the flour and add some of the water; start mixing with a spoon and continue adding the water. Once all absorbed, add the extra virgin olive oil and the salt, then start kneading by hand first in the bowl and then on a work surface. Work the dough for a few minutes, then transfer it to a bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise until doubled (depending on the temperature, it can take from one hour to two hours).
Take the dough, place it on a floured table, and divide it into 8 parts. Form round dough balls, cover them with a towel, and let them rise for half an hour.
Meanwhile, prepare a sauce by mixing tomato puree in a bowl with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of salt.
Flatten the dough balls with your fingertips to give them a round shape. Season with the tomato sauce over the entire surface.
Transfer the round mini pizzas (one or two at a time) into the air fryer basket and cook at 390°F for about 6 minutes. Open and add the mozzarella or cheese cubes. Cook for another 2 minutes at 390°F. They will be perfect even at the bottom (even with just one heating element).
* Alternatively, bake them in a preheated oven at 430°F for 15 minutes.Serve the round mini pizzas hot and melty or cold: they will be delicious either way. Enjoy your meal!
Tips for You
✔ No need to flip the mini pizzas halfway through cooking: with this type of dough, the mini pizzas will cook perfectly both on top and bottom, even with just one heating element (as in most air fryers). I assure you, they will be perfectly cooked underneath, even if they won’t be golden or charred like in an oven.
✔ You can cook them in the air fryer or in the oven by increasing the temperature and cooking times (you’ll find all the info above in the recipe).
✔ If you don’t have dry yeast, you can use fresh yeast; in this case, the conversion is very simple: 1 tsp dry yeast = 10 g fresh yeast. If you choose fresh, just dissolve it in part of the water you’ll use for the recipe.
✔ Round mini pizzas are perfect hot (and melty) or cold!
✔ For this recipe, it is necessary to cook the round mini pizzas directly in the air fryer basket without any trays or parchment paper: this way, they will cook thanks to the air circulating 360 degrees from below to above, allowing for ideal air frying. Trays or parchment paper would obstruct the air circulation within the air fryer and create condensation under the mini pizzas.
✔ I recommend using a BBQ mesh placed directly into your air fryer’s non-stick basket: the mesh will protect the non-stick coating (keeping it like new) and allow the food to cook evenly, letting air pass through 360 degrees. You can find it on Amazon by clicking here.
✔ Alternatively, you can use perforated parchment paper, which allows air to pass from below to above. You can find it on Amazon by clicking here: link.
✔ For this recipe, I used the COSORI 4.7 air fryer, which you can find on Amazon here.
