Ingredients for 8 Carnival Masks with Nutella and Mascarpone
- 1 roll puff pastry (rectangular)
- 3 tablespoons Nutella®
- 2 tablespoons mascarpone
- 1 shot glass milk (or one egg)
- to taste sugar sprinkles (colored as in my case)
As indicated in the ingredient list, if you do not want to use milk to moisten the surface of the Puff Pastry Masks with Nutella, you can use an egg. Beat the egg in a small bowl with the help of a fork and use it to brush the carnival masks.
Tools for the Carnival Masks with Nutella Recipe
- 1 Knife
- 1 Rolling pin
- 2 Baking trays
- 2 Parchment paper
- 1 Bowl
- 1 Spatula
- 1 Oven
- 2 Spoons
- 1 Brush
- 1 Cutter
As previously indicated, you will also need: a pencil and a sheet of paper because we will make our own Carnival Mask stencil for this recipe. If you already have the cutter, you can directly use that.
Steps for the Carnival Masks with Nutella and Mascarpone Recipe
The very first thing to do is to preheat the oven to 180 degrees in static mode. Then arm yourself with paper and pencil, or a pen if you’re so good at drawing, and create your stencil. The Carnival Mask can be made in many shapes, I chose the simplest one because I’m terrible at drawing. I followed a tutorial I found online to prepare it and even used an eraser because obviously, I didn’t nail it on the first try.
If you have done these two things, you are already on the sweetest Carnival Float in the world. Now take the puff pastry roll from the fridge and leave it rolled on the work surface. Let’s focus on the filling cream while the puff pastry returns to room temperature.
Take a bowl and pour in two tablespoons of mascarpone and three tablespoons of hazelnut cream or another cream of your choice. Work the two ingredients with a spoon or a spatula. We need to obtain a cream that is easy to spread, this will help us in the most delicate phase of the recipe, which is spreading the heart of the Carnival Masks.
Now roll out the puff pastry and position the stencil on it. With a sharp knife without serrations, start cutting the pastry creating our masks. Be gentle but decisive, quick cuts without applying too much pressure on the puff pastry not to flatten it further.
Gradually arrange the puff pastry masks on a baking tray where we have placed a sheet of parchment paper. I made 8 Carnival Masks so I baked with two different trays.
Place all the puff pastry masks and brush each one with milk using a kitchen brush.
As indicated under the ingredients list, if you don’t have milk, you can replace it with an egg. Take a small bowl and with the help of a fork, quickly beat the whole egg. Again, with a kitchen brush, brush the surface of the Puff Pastry Masks.
We are ready to bake the Carnival Masks, I decided to bake one tray at a time to better monitor the cooking. The cooking time for these Carnival desserts is about 10 minutes with static mode at 180 degrees.
Once baking is finished, we must let the puff pastry cool completely by placing the masks on plates or a cooling rack for desserts. I let about an hour pass.
After this time, with the tip of a sharp knife, we will cut the pastry and split it into two halves, creating two sides. Next, spread the base with the hazelnut cream. Place the other half on top and put it back on a plate. Proceed in this way with all 8 Carnival Masks.
If you want to make the eyes as I did, use the tip of the knife, gently cut the top pastry, creating the shape of two eyes. Then, with the tip of a teaspoon, add more Nutella in the hollow created.
Sprinkle everything with colored sugar sprinkles and serve your colorful and delicious Carnival dessert. Wasn’t it easy and quick to do it together?
For any step, remember there’s a video recipe under the first photo! I just have to wish you a good appetite and remind you that I wait for you every day here in my kitchen!!!
Recipe Variations
You can substitute hazelnut cream with pistachio cream, or custard. As already indicated, you can replace milk with an egg to brush the surface of the Puff Pastry Carnival Masks.
Then store theMasks with Nutella in a cake container for a few days, of course, if you haven’t made them all disappear immediately!!!
