Halloween is approaching and this time I wanted to think of the kids with this recipe: Hot Dog Mummies with puff pastry, truly spooky but mostly tasty! Honestly, the blog had no recipes about Halloween or Witches’ Night or similar, so for the first year, I decided to make an effort and concentrate on this occasion, especially thinking of the kids.
The occasion was dinner with my cousin Andrea and his kids, all it took was saying I would prepare something for Halloween and they were already ecstatic. For the dinner, I obviously didn’t just prepare the puff pastry and hot dog mummies, in fact, I’ll share the recipe for homemade hamburgers because they love them!
I’ll quickly explain what you need to make the puff pastry mummies and you’ll see that if you have nephews or children, they will appreciate your effort! Don’t you think they are perfect for “trick or treat?”
Originally, Halloween was an Irish celebration that coincided with the Celtic New Year and marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter. It was the day when the light of summer gave way to the winter darkness, on the night between October 31st and November 1st. If you thought, like many of us, that it was an American holiday, you were wrong. It would later become the night of spirits, but previously, the gods were thanked.
On the blog, you’ll also find the recipe for puff pastry bats filled with Nutella, perfect for celebrating with the kids. You can read and save the recipe by clicking here. Ingredients for about 12 Hot Dog Mummies:
- 6 hot dogs
- 1 roll puff pastry
- to taste mayonnaise (for the eyes)
- to taste black pepper (or cloves for the eyes)
Tools
- 1 Baking Sheet
- 1 Knife
- 1 Toothpick
- 1 Oven
Preparation of Halloween Hot Dog Mummies:
A small premise: I’ve been thinking for two weeks about how the eyes of these puff pastry mummies should be made, and in the end, I went with the simplest option possible: mayonnaise and black pepper. Of course, there are many variations; some use fake eyes available in toy stores, some make them with sugar paste, and others use cloves and many other options. Therefore, in the list of necessary ingredients, you’ll see mayonnaise and pepper, but they are replaceable, of course.
To prepare the Halloween Mummies, start by preheating the oven to 356°F in static mode.
Take a baking sheet and spread a sheet of parchment paper. Unroll the puff pastry and cut it with a knife into thin strips. For the front part, I used the strips, but for the back, which is the mummy’s back, I left the puff pastry whole to make it a bit stiffer.
At this point, cut the hot dogs in half lengthwise to get two mummies per single hot dog. I chose chicken hot dogs, but of course, this is also to your taste. I wrapped the hot dog with the puff pastry, being careful not to break it or overlap it too much.
Bake the hot dog mummies for about 25 – 30 minutes; they should be golden and crispy.
To create the eyes with mayonnaise and pepper, I used a toothpick only when the hot dogs were completely cold, otherwise the mayonnaise melts and becomes invisible.
You can serve them hot with some accompanying sauces, like mayonnaise or ketchup, or serve them cold.
Enjoy your meal!!!
Notes:
You can serve the puff pastry and hot dog mummies as an appetizer for the Halloween dinner or use them, sealed in small food bags, for the kids who will knock on your door during the evening asking: “trick or treat?”
