Steamed asparagus, a tasty and typical spring side dish perfect to serve with classic eggs or to accompany other main courses, you prepare them in a few minutes, and they will be delicious. Once you have cooked the steamed asparagus, you can also use them to prepare savory pies. You can use both green asparagus and white asparagus, and you can cook them in a pot using the appropriate steaming basket, or in a steamer, microwave, or even in a pressure cooker. The steaming time for asparagus varies depending on how thick the asparagus is and the cooking method you use. When you prepare white asparagus steamed, you must first clean them well because, unlike green asparagus, they need to be peeled first to remove the tougher and more fibrous outer part. To prepare green asparagus steamed, just remove the final white part, which will be the hardest, and wash them well. Please use fresh asparagus, and to recognize them, just bend them near the tip; if they remain curved and bent, the asparagus is not fresh and will also have many more fibers. Besides steaming, I recommend trying boiled asparagus, asparagus in a pan, asparagus en papillote or GRILLED ASPARAGUS and also check out all my ASPARAGUS RECIPES. How to cook steamed asparagus
Let’s start preparing the steamed asparagus. First, clean the asparagus, remove the hardest final part, and if necessary, peel them with a knife or more simply with a peeler, then wash them well under running water.
Take a pot that fits your steaming basket and add water, about 0.8 inches will be enough and it should not reach above the basket in contact with the asparagus. Put the basket, cover with a lid, and put on the fire, as soon as it starts to boil, add the asparagus neatly, cover with the lid, and cook for 5 minutes.
Once cooked, remove the basket from the pot and arrange the asparagus on a plate, season with olive oil, pepper, and salt, and the side dish is ready.
