Baked Tropea onions are a tasty and fragrant side dish, easy to make and very appetizing.
The Tropea red onion is a variety cultivated in Calabria for over two thousand years, imported by the Phoenicians. With its sweet and fine flavor, round or elongated shape, it is widely used in cooking, consumed both raw, in delicious salads, and cooked in many recipes. It contains vitamins C and E, iron, zinc, magnesium, and iodine and has anti-sclerotic properties, benefiting the heart and arteries.
With few simple ingredients, baked they are a flavorful side dish perfect for accompanying meat or fish dishes.

Ingredients
- 4 Tropea red onions
- aromatic herbs (chopped: thyme, sage, rosemary)
- extra virgin olive oil
- lemon zest (grated)
- coarse salt
- pepper
Preparation of Baked Tropea Onions
Remove the roots and the outermost skin of the onions and cut them in half.
Place them in a non-stick pan with the cut side facing up.Drizzle them with a little extra virgin olive oil and let them cook over high heat for five minutes, gently shaking the pan occasionally, being careful to always keep the cut side facing up.
Transfer them to a baking dish, keeping them always with the cut side up and sprinkle with chopped aromatic herbs.Season with a bit of coarse salt, some grated lemon zest, pepper to taste, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
Bake in a preheated static oven at 375°F for about half an hour.
Remove from the oven and serve your baked Tropea onions.
