I often prepare Golden Bread, but also pasta frittatas or mozzarella in carrozza when I want to make a tasty and at the same time delicious appetizer. I usually make it on Sundays, when I have much more time to dedicate to cooking, my great passion. Every time it’s a joy for everyone and it disappears in no time. This dish, which in some ways resembles the savory “French toast,” originated as a way to use stale bread and has roots in Roman times. I prepare the golden bread in 5 minutes using a few simple ingredients available at home: bread, eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt.
If you want to make everyone at home happy, make your golden bread right away.

Ingredients
- 14.11 oz rustic bread (stale)
- 4 eggs
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tsp fine salt
- 2 cups peanut oil
- to taste pepper
Preparation and Steps
To prepare the golden bread, the first thing you need to do is cut the stale bread into slices about 1.5 cm thick (approximately 0.6 inches).
Then, in a large bowl, beat the eggs with the milk, grated Parmesan, salt, and pepper. Mix well until the mixture is homogeneous. Now the fun begins… Dip the bread slices in the beaten egg, making sure they absorb the liquid well on both sides.
Now it’s time to fry the golden bread. Heat the peanut oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. When the oil is hot, fry the bread slices until they are golden and crispy on both sides (about 3-4 minutes per side).
Your Golden Bread is ready! Arrange the bread slices on a serving platter or wooden board. If you want, you can add a touch of color and freshness by garnishing with chopped fresh parsley. I prefer it plain 😉.
Enjoy your meal and see you next time.

Advice
For an optimal result, it’s important to use stale bread. If the bread is too fresh, it may become too soft during frying.
If you don’t like Parmesan, or can’t use it for various reasons, you can omit it. You’ll see that the flavor will be just as delicious.
Golden Bread is a versatile dish; it can be served as an appetizer, side dish, or main course, accompanied by cold cuts, cheese, or grilled vegetables.
