Emoji Cookies

Emoji Cookies to celebrate Flavio’s First Communion for which we have already seen the cake in this post and the emoji cupcakes. To make the decorated cookies, I prepared a shortbread dough ideal for decoration. Some cookies were decorated with simple colored fondant sausages “glued” onto the cookies with a thin layer of honey, while for the Emojis, I made yellow fondant circles applied again with honey and decorated with different expressions. I had a lot of fun preparing these very colorful cookies and cupcakes. For decorating the cookies, about 2 lbs 14 oz of fondant was needed, which you can buy ready-made or prepare at home following this recipe and then color it with food coloring, I recommend those in paste as they have more intense colors.

For lovers of decorated cakes, I remind you of some for birthdays and Communions, the latest is gluten-free

Ingredients

  • 4 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/8 cups butter (cold from the fridge)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • to taste vanilla flavor
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 lbs 14 oz g fondant

Tools

To make these cookies, I used lollipop sticks so I could stick them into the styrofoam base after decorating and packaging them in food bags.

  • 1 Cookie Cutters
  • 24 Sticks
  • 1 Smoother

Preparation

Preparing decorated cookies is not difficult, it just requires some precision and patience

  • Possibly prepare in the planetary mixer to avoid overworking it with your hands, the shortbread dough that will serve as the base for your cookies. Add all the ingredients together, of course breaking up the butter but trying to keep it cold and start working all the ingredients until a shortbread dough ball is formed. You can immediately work your shortbread dough trying to touch it as little as possible; roll it out on a floured work surface or better yet, roll it out on floured parchment paper and roll it to a thickness of about 1/8 inch.

From this layer, cut out 24 circles with the cookie cutter and place them on the baking sheets covered with parchment paper. Two baking sheets will be needed. Bake your cookies in a preheated oven for only 10 minutes, they should remain light and slightly golden.

Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool. While the cookies cool, with the same cookie cutter, cut as many yellow fondant circles as the number of Emojis you want to make. Now have fun creating the faces you prefer.

For the twists, just take the colors of fondant you want to use, create many sausages and gradually lengthen them by mixing the colors to create long threads that you will twist around the cookie.

Both the faces and the twists must be “glued” onto the cookies using honey slightly warmed in the microwave to make it fluid because it should only be a thin layer of honey on the cookie to act as a glue but should not fill.

NOTES

If you want to stick the cookies with sticks to place them vertically on styrofoam supports, you will need to stick the cookies before baking, being very careful not to pierce the cookies. You should push them in by making opposition with the table on one side of the cookie and the palm of your hand on the other, so the stick will rise to about halfway through the cookie (to be stable) without piercing the surface of the cookie.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many days in advance can I prepare the decorated cookies?

If you pack them one by one well closed in the appropriate food bags, you can prepare them several days in advance, even a week, and they will remain well for consumption.

  • Should the fondant be for covering or modeling?

I recommend the classic fondant for covering, simpler, it does not contain gums, and you don’t need a particularly elastic fondant because these are flat and simple decorations.
