Dried figs stuffed with nuts and covered in chocolate are delicious treats prepared during the winter season and especially at Christmas time, enjoyed alongside nougats and other crunchy Christmas sweets.
These delights are usually prepared in southern Italy, following old traditions.
In the old days, my mother used to dry them in the sun and then fill them during the holiday season with toasted nuts and grated citrus peels, enjoying them during the festivities.
Today I wanted to replicate this recipe by covering them with dark chocolate for an extra touch of indulgence.
The preparation is very simple: just open the figs and stuff them with a mix of almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, and grated tangerine and orange peel, then cover with a crunchy shell of dark chocolate.
You can customize the recipe by filling them with only walnuts or only almonds or only hazelnuts, either whole or chopped.

Steps for Dried Figs Stuffed with Nuts and Covered in Chocolate
To prepare the dried figs, start by toasting the nuts. On a baking tray, place the almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts, preheat the oven to 356°F (180°C) and toast them for about 5 minutes.
Remove from the oven and let cool.
In the meantime, divide the dried figs in two and grate the citrus peels.
Stuff each fig with an almond, a hazelnut, a piece of walnut, and some citrus peel.
Close and press well with your hands, and do the same with all the other figs.
In a saucepan using a bain-marie or in the microwave for a few minutes, melt the dark chocolate, dip and cover each stuffed fig, and place on a baking tray with parchment paper.
Once completed, let the chocolate dry and harden in a cool place for about 30 minutes or for 10 minutes in the refrigerator. When the chocolate coating has cooled, the figs are ready to serve.
Storage, Variations, and Tips
The figs can be stored for about a week in a cool place.
You can fill them with whatever you like best, only almonds or only walnuts, or chop everything.
You can also toast the stuffed figs for a few minutes in the oven before covering them with chocolate.
If desired, you can also add a few drops of rum to flavor the chocolate and decorate the surface with chopped nuts.
