The owl cookies are fun and tasty treats perfect for Halloween. For this recipe, you’ll make a simple shortcrust pastry, and to shape the cookies like owls, you’ll need a simple heart-shaped cookie cutter.
Making these cookies is easy and fun, even with little ones. Once the cookies are made, I placed a half almond in the center to create the beak and baked them in the oven.
Once baked and cooled, sugar eyes are added to the cookies, and they’re ready to be enjoyed!

Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup sunflower oil (or 2/3 cup butter)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 32 sugar eyes
- 8 almonds
- as needed hazelnut spread (or chocolate)
Tools
- Cutter
- Rolling Pin
- Sugar Eyes
Steps
To make the owl cookies, pour the flour and oil into a bowl or mixer.
Add the egg, sugar, vanilla extract and knead. You should achieve a homogeneous mixture. If it doesn’t knead quickly at first, don’t be discouraged and keep mixing the ingredients. It will turn into a very smooth and compact dough.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rest in the fridge for 10 minutes.
Then transfer the dough to a floured surface. Roll out the dough with the help of a rolling pin to a thickness of about 1/8 inch.
Use a heart-shaped cutter to form the cookies, then remove the tip from the heart-shaped shortcrust pastries with the tip of the cutter; this way you will get owl-shaped cookies.
Cut the almonds in half and place them in the center of each cookie to create the beak, pressing lightly.
Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes, or until golden. Take them out and let them cool.
Use a little chocolate to attach the sugar eyes to the cookies. Enjoy!
