The chiacchiere with chocolate baked or in a hot air fryer, are Carnival sweets and a great alternative to the traditional fried chiacchiere. I made a classic dough with the addition of Anisetta, a green anise-based liqueur typical of the city of Ascoli Piceno; alternatively, you can use rum or grappa. Crunchy and fragrant, these chiacchiere are irresistible: you can’t stop at one!

To make the chiacchiere with chocolate, pour the flour into a well on a pastry board, and add the sugar and baking powder.
In the center of the well, pour the eggs and start mixing with the help of a fork.
Then add the liqueur, the grated zest of a lemon, and the cold butter (or oil). Knead with your hands until the ingredients are well combined.
Work the dough until you get a smooth ball. Then, with a rolling pin, roll out a thin sheet. Use a fluted pastry wheel to cut out rectangles about 4×2 inches.
Place the chiacchiere on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated static oven at 350°F for about 12-15 minutes. In a preheated fan oven at 390°F for 10 minutes
Place the chiacchiere inside the basket of the air fryer lined with parchment paper.
Cook in the hot air fryer at 390°F for about 5 minutes.
Let the chiacchiere cool and melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler.
Dip the ends of the chiacchiere in the chocolate and garnish with colored sprinkles. Let the chocolate set.
If desired, serve the chiacchiere with a dusting of powdered sugar. Enjoy!
