The grilled squid steak is a light and tasty ingredient that we can prepare in advance by marinating it in oil and lemon with garlic and fresh thyme.
This type of seafood is excellent cooked on a griddle or in a pan; avoid overcooking it, otherwise it becomes as hard as a rock.
Today, instead of Esselunga I went grocery shopping at Famila at Cicogna (a hamlet of San Lazzaro di Savena) because this supermarket has excellent fruit, a wide selection of meats and a nice fish counter where I bought this squid steak that I then grilled.
I also bought some beautiful, fat gilthead bream and some sea bass fillets that I then baked with lots of vegetables!
The squid steak is a quick and low-calorie main course (68 kcal per 100 g of product), especially when grilled, and it pairs wonderfully with a fresh and simple side such as plum tomatoes with basil.
The squid — which is sometimes mistaken for squid/calamari — is a little less prized but excellent cooked roasted in the oven, boiled in aromatized water, stewed (for example with peas), pan-seared or even fried!

- Preparation time: 5 Minutes
- Cooking time: 15 Minutes
- Portions: 2
- Cooking methods: Grill
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All seasons
Ingredients
- 1 lb squid steak (steak)
- 1 lemon (juice only)
- to taste extra virgin olive oil
- 1 garlic clove
- to taste salt
- to taste pepper
Preparation of the Grilled Squid Steak Recipe
For this very simple and low-calorie dish I let the squid steaks marinate in a container where I squeezed the lemon juice and added a few tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and one minced garlic clove.
I left these large slices of squid in the marinade for about an hour in the refrigerator and then allowed them to come to room temperature for about twenty minutes before cooking.
At cooking time I placed the grill over the flame and heated it well; meanwhile I scored a diamond pattern on the squid steak with a sharp blade without actually cutting through the steak.
When the griddle is searing hot I put the steak drained from the marinade and patted dry with kitchen paper, and let it cook for 6-7 minutes per side. Be careful … if you prolong the cooking the squid steak will become rubbery and inedible!!
I proceed in the same way on the other side and finish cooking this seafood main course.
I served this fish main course with washed plum tomatoes cut into wedges and dressed with extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper and basil!
Enjoy your meal!
Annalisa
