Greek Style Shrimp and Feta

Greek Style Shrimp and Feta is a dish I love very much, which I cooked with many others when I collaborated for years with Greek friends who had pubs and restaurants in Bologna.

When I miss this cuisine, I often go to TO STEKI in Largo Respighi in my adopted city of Bologna, and I highly recommend booking a visit, because the place is always full, hoping that restaurants reopen soon due to Covid-19!!!!

Greek cuisine uses feta in many preparations, and this seafood dish is a delightful example! It is extensive, genuine, Mediterranean-flavored, and pays attention to the Balkan and Middle Eastern areas with intoxicating spices and aromas.

A characteristic that differs from our way of enjoying and eating food is the temperature, as Greeks do not like eating very hot or boiling foods.
As for beverages, Greeks enjoy dining with either white or red wine, beer, and water, and 30% of Greek wines are artisanal, with excellent quality wines!
The most famous wine is retsina, a white resin wine much appreciated by foreigners, but ouzo is also highly admired!

  • 10 pieces large shrimp (cleaned from shell and vein)
  • 1 onion
  • 200 g tomato sauce
  • 150 g feta
  • 4 cherry tomatoes
  • to taste dried oregano
  • to taste basil
  • to taste extra virgin olive oil
  • to taste salt (be mindful of the feta's saltiness!)
  • to taste pepper

Preparation of the Greek Style Shrimp and Feta Recipe

  • To prepare the Greek Style Shrimp and Feta recipe, I finely chop the onion and place it in a pan where a bit of extra virgin olive oil is sizzling.

    As the vegetable starts to color, I add the tomato sauce and fresh cherry tomatoes, washed, dried, and cut into wedges.

  • I let everything cook for 7/8 minutes on very low heat, adjusting with salt and pepper.

    Now I add the shrimp cleaned of shell and vein and continue for a few minutes, but not too long, or the shellfish will become hard as a rock!

  • To flavor this Greek dish with feta and shrimp, I add dried oregano, basil leaves, and finally the feta in cubes.

    I cover the pot with a lid and turn off the heat after a couple of minutes, allowing just enough time for the typical Greek cuisine cheese to soften.

  • A simple preparation with an intriguing and special taste, these shrimp saganaki have a delicious sea aroma!
