You must love what you do. Every sweet has its own story: the person you make it for, the feelings you experience while making it… everything enters your hands and while kneading you think with your hands, love with your hands, and create with your hands.
Alessandro D’Avenia

Thinking of this phrase today, I made these owl cookies that I will make again with Mia, my niece who enjoys making cakes and tagliatelle and who already has a dessert named after her on the blog
Mia's cakeMIA’s cake

These owl cookies are crispy buttery shortbread and very tasty that I tried today, but now that we can see and hug our relatives again, I will make them soon with Mia!!!!!!!

To make the shortbread owl-shaped cookies you just need a little patience to insert the feet (almond slivers), the nose (a whole almond with skin), the eyes (dough balls with homemade chocolate drops, thus a bit crooked), and to make two feathered wings first by cutting semicircles with a round cutter and then making rough diamonds…
Just watch and reproduce: you will see you have no difficulty!!!!!!

OWL COOKIES

Owl Cookies
  • Difficulty: Very easy
  • Cost: Very cheap
  • Rest time: 2 Hours
  • Preparation time: 10 Minutes
  • Portions: About 20/25 cookies
  • Cooking methods: Oven
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Owl Cookies RECIPE INGREDIENTS

  • 1.75 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 Egg yolk (medium)
  • 5.3 oz Butter
  • 0.47 cups Powdered sugar
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • as needed Almonds (unpeeled)
  • as needed Almond slices
  • as needed Chocolate chips

TOOLS FOR OWL COOKIES RECIPE

  • Cutters
  • Baking sheets
  • Parchment paper

PREPARATION OF OWL COOKIES RECIPE

  • In a bowl, mix the sifted flour with the powdered sugar and a pinch of fine salt.

Add the butter in pieces, crumble the dough, and add the yolk.

Make the classic ball of shortcrust pastry dough and wrap it in cling film.

Put it in the fridge and let it rest for 60 minutes: although I left it all night, I’m a fussbudget!

  • • After the resting time, preheat the oven to 356°F.

Roll out the dough between two sheets of parchment paper to avoid warming it too much and use a cutter to make as many circles as possible: mine are about 2.75 inches.

    • Now insert the almond feet, I make the balls and embed the chocolate, and still using the cutter, I outline the wings and make them feathered with a small knife, cutting the dough.

  • • I confess I put a sheet of parchment paper on the kitchen table and immediately placed the circles and slowly made the owl cookies.

Then I cut squares containing the owl-shaped cookie and one by one placed them on the baking sheet… it seemed longer but the cookie remained intact!

  • • Bake the owl cookies for about 12 minutes until they are just golden. Be careful with the feet as they are so thin they tend to burn!!!

  • Let them cool before arranging them on trays and plates to enjoy them…

    Delicious, crispy, and even cute!!!

Mia, your aunt will soon arrive, and we’ll cook, little mouse!!!

Enjoy your meal with owl cookies!!

    Annalisa
