Labneh Yogurt Cheese: Discover How to Make It at Home!

in ,

Browsing the web, I found on various French-language sites the recipe for labneh yogurt cheese also called labneh or laban, with YOGURT from cow’s milk.

After a little research, I read that it is also made with soy yogurt and is a typical Middle Eastern food, especially in Palestine and Lebanon, where it is among the meze (or mezze), i.e., among the most common creamy APPETIZERS in the country.

I also read that LABNEH YOGURT CHEESE is also prepared in a sweet version by adding honey to the labneh cheese once it’s made.

I personally wanted to try it savory, so I prepared some
spices (paprika, turmeric, and freshly ground black pepper) to enjoy with some bread.

Ideally, it would be PITA BREAD, but I settled for the bread from my dear baker Lollo and was not disappointed.

The Middle Eastern yogurt spreadable cheese LABNEH is extremely creamy and delicate, a delicious mousse or cream for MIXED APPETIZERS, also great when mixed with just olive oil and fine salt! It’s very important when making HOMEMADE LABNEH CHEESE to have a fine gauze like those commonly used for less appetizing purposes…

HOW TO SERVE LABNEH (yogurt cheese): Delicious Ideas and Pairings

As an appetizer; serve in a bowl dressed with extra virgin olive oil, a pinch of za’atar, oregano or paprika with flatbread, pita, or croutons

As a sauce or spread: delicious on toasted bread, crackers or as a thin base layer for canapés

In a sweet version: with an addition of honey, nuts, fresh fruit for breakfast and/or snack

To accompany vegetables: it’s great with carrot sticks, cucumber, and bell pepper strips

With ethnic dishes: for example, with falafel, with couscous as they do in the Middle East.

Preparation for LABNEH YOGURT CHEESE RECIPE

  • To prepare homemade labneh yogurt cheese, start by lining a sieve with the sterile gauze. Pour in the YOGURT and … forget about it for 6/8 hours.

  • As time passes, the YOGURT will lose its whey to become very creamy.

  • After the time has passed, remove it from the gauze carefully and place it in a bowl; mix it by adding some good extra virgin olive oil and fine salt.

  • As I mentioned above, now add to the YOGURT the spices you prefer!

I added paprika, black pepper, and turmeric; then with some PLAIN BREAD BITES, enjoy… Bon appétit with the homemade labneh yogurt cheese!
