Caramelized onions are one of those simple preparations that can transform any dish into something special. With just a few ingredients (onions, brown sugar, butter, and balsamic vinegar), you achieve an irresistible taste, sweet, delicate, and intense at the same time. Perfect as an easy side dish to accompany meats, cheeses, or rustic dishes, they also become a delicious appetizer served with crostini or a tasty idea for topping bruschetta and sandwiches.
Preparing them is really simple, it just requires a bit of patience and slow cooking, which allows the onions to become soft and glossy, releasing all their flavor. Once ready, they store well in the refrigerator for a few days and are always ready to use, perhaps to add a refined touch even to the simplest dishes.
If, like me, you love the authentic flavors of vegetables, I recommend trying other side dish recipes with onions, such as baked red onions or baked onions, perfect for those who want to enjoy the natural sweetness of this vegetable in different but always tasty versions.

Preparation of CARAMELIZED ONIONS

Add the onions.
Add the brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, and one or two pinches of salt; stir and cover with a lid.
Let them cook on low heat until the onions are soft (it will take about 25-30 minutes). Stir occasionally and, if the onions dry out too much during cooking, you can add a few tablespoons of hot water.
Serve the caramelized onions warm or at room temperature.
