The hot chocolate like at the café, is perfect made at home, for a winter evening, ideal to have while watching a movie on the couch and with a blanket over your shoulders or legs.
Forget about the ready mixes the ones in powder found in supermarkets, then I’ll give you both the version with dark chocolate 🍫 and with unsweetened cocoa powder, so you can decide which one you like best based on your taste 😊.
I love hot chocolate and sometimes I even make it with milk chocolate, reducing the amount of sugar otherwise it becomes too sweet.
Not to mention the whipped cream dollop I add for my nieces when they come to visit, delicious!!
You’ll see it’s not difficult and once you get the hang of it, you won’t buy the ready mix in stores anymore, and you won’t go to the café for it because, let’s face it, at home it’s better.
If you love chocolate as much as we do, try the vegan chocolate mousse and you’ll fall in love.
Below I’ll leave you other ideas with chocolate and also with cocoa, and then right after the photo, let’s find out how to make hot chocolate like at the café!!

Ingredients for hot chocolate like at the café
- 2 cups whole milk (or plant-based drink such as soy, oat, etc.)
- 4.23 oz 75% dark chocolate
- 5.15 oz granulated sugar
- 1.41 oz cornstarch
- 2 cups milk (also plant-based if desired)
- 1.76 oz unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1.76 oz granulated sugar
- 1.76 oz cornstarch
Hot chocolate preparation
Grate the chocolate using a small-hole grater and mix it with the sugar and cornstarch.
Bring the milk to the stove in a saucepan, and when it’s hot but not boiling, lower the heat and add the prepared chocolate.
Stir with a wooden spoon and keep it on moderate heat, allowing the hot chocolate to thicken for 3 or 4 minutes.
In a saucepan, mix the unsweetened cocoa, sugar, and cornstarch.
Heat the milk and pour a few spoonfuls into the saucepan to dissolve the mixture.
Pour the remaining milk and bring to the stove on moderate heat, stirring until the hot chocolate is thick and creamy, it will take just 3 or 4 minutes.
You can make the hot chocolate in the microwave, simply mix cornstarch, sugar, and unsweetened cocoa, then divide the mixture into 2 cups.
Add milk to each cup and cook at 750w for 2 minutes, stopping after 1 minute to stir.
Storage, tips, and variations
Hot chocolate should be consumed as soon as it is made, but you can store it in the fridge for 2 days and then heat it up in the microwave for 40 seconds.
You can use milk chocolate 🍫 or white chocolate but without adding sugar, otherwise, it will be too sweet.
