How to make the Shortbread Christmas Trees

  • You can prepare the dough by hand or with the help of a mixer. Mix the butter cut into small pieces with the sugar and flour in a bowl. Add an egg, the grated zest of one untreated orange, and half a teaspoon of baking soda.

  • Quickly knead until you have a soft but not sticky dough. Form a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and let the shortbread dough rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or longer.

  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured work surface to a thickness of 1/8 to 3/16 inches. Cut out many cookies with a tree-shaped cutter. Roll out the scraps to make more cookies. Arrange the cookies slightly apart on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  • Bake the tree cookies in a static oven preheated to 340°F for 12-14 minutes. Do not let them darken too much. Let them cool. Melt the dark chocolate cut into small pieces in a double boiler.

  • Transfer the melted chocolate into a disposable piping bag. Cut a very small piece from the tip to create a small hole. Decorate the Tree Cookies with the chocolate as desired. Before the chocolate hardens, decorate with colorful sprinkles of all kinds.

See you tomorrow with a new recipe, hugs, Loredana

Loredana’s Tips

You can prepare the shortbread in advance and store it in the fridge for 2-3 days, or you can freeze it.

If you want to prepare the cookies in advance, do not decorate them with chocolate. You can keep them in a container for a few days and decorate them last with chocolate and sprinkles
