Today’s recipe is designed as a snack for kids or those moments when you want to munch on something light and tasty: cinnamon apple chips. Very easy to make, you only need two ingredients: apples and ground cinnamon. And the oven, obviously, as once they are sliced and sprinkled with cinnamon, the apple slices need to dry out in the oven.
For this recipe, I chose organic Bonita apples from Val Venosta, which with their sweet and sour taste are immediately captivating. The Bonita variety comes from a cross between Topaz and Cripps Pink apples and has a smooth and shiny appearance. Its skin is red as you see in the photo, and this was also a reason why I chose this apple to make these chips, don’t you think they are even more enticing with their red edges?
- Difficulty: Easy
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Cooking methods: Oven
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All seasons
Ingredients
- 3 apples (I used organic Bonita apples from Val Venosta)
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Steps
To prepare the cinnamon apple chips, wash and dry the apples.
Preheat the oven to 230°F and line 2 baking trays with parchment paper.
Cut the apples into thin slices, about 1/16 inch thick, horizontally. Place the apple slices on the trays in a single layer. Put the cinnamon in a sieve and sprinkle the apple slices with the cinnamon.
Bake at 230°F for about 1 hour, then turn the apple slices over and bake again for about 45 minutes, placing a wooden spoon in the oven door to keep a crack open for steam to escape. When the apples are slightly curled and dry, they are ready. The drying time may vary depending on the thickness of the slices, so check them often toward the end of cooking. Initially, they will be a bit soft, but once cooled, they will become crispy.
Store the apple chips in a paper bag to maintain their crispiness.
Tip
Dried apples are generally sweeter than fresh ones, so there’s no need to add sugar. However, if you prefer them very sweet, sprinkle the apple slices with a mix of cinnamon and powdered sugar.
