The steamed milk buns are part of Chinese culture. Known as mantou or baozi, they are certainly very different from those baked in the oven. Their characteristic is that they do not form a crust, and observing their pale appearance, one might even doubt if they are cooked enough. Anyway, I tried this new recipe with the built-in steamer of my Monsieur Cuisine appliance, which I have been learning to use recently. I had already tried steamed vegetables, which I liked a lot, and then I wanted to try the famous mantou. It was not difficult, also because their cooking time of twenty minutes is already set in the program, and I was satisfied. Therefore, the steamed milk buns are sweet and resemble brioche.

Pour the solid ingredients into the bowl of Monsieur Cuisine: flour, sugar, salt, vanillin.

Remove the dough and let it rise in a large bowl. Wait for the dough to double in size (about two hours).
Prepare the steam basket following the instructions of the Monsieur Cuisine appliance and place parchment paper on the bottom of the tray.
Form the buns and place them on the paper. Let them rise again for ten/fifteen minutes and cook for twenty minutes, the time automatically set by the steam cooking program.
Let cool before removing the buns. The Chinese steamed milk buns may not seem cooked enough, but they certainly are, and they can also be enjoyed as a snack.
