Toasted chickpeas replaced chips

When I was a child there were no surprise chips that are now highly desired. Sometimes they aren’t even eaten, but the important thing is finding the surprise. We had crunchy toasted chickpeas. We usually went out on Sunday mornings and the elderly lady was always there waiting for us to fill the paper cones with chickpeas. We bought them for little money and they were so good that, fragrant one after another, they soon disappeared. Those were the days… healthy, cheap and beneficial food.

Toasted chickpeas replaced chips
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Cheap
  • Portions: 10
  • Cooking methods: Microwave
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients

  • 14 oz chickpeas
  • 8.5 cups water
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • to taste salt

Tools

  • Microwave oven

Steps

  • Select the dry chickpeas, discarding the broken ones, and soak them in plenty of water with baking soda the day before (at least twelve hours before) in a large bowl.
I remember soaking them in the evening or before going to bed.
Dry them well with a cloth or paper towel after draining.
Fill the bottom of a plate with chickpeas and lightly salt. Cook for about twenty minutes in the oven set to medium power. After ten minutes, open the oven and stir.

Cook in several batches. Unfortunately, in the microwave, you cannot cook large quantities at once, until the end. It will take at least two hours in total.
If you’re tired or don’t have time, you can take a break and resume later. Nothing will happen.
Keep the toasted chickpeas in a wicker basket without covering them to serve with the aperitif or when you invite friends over to watch a movie as snacks. You can also use them to add to the buffet table at parties.
