The marinara pizza rolls are ready in no time and so tasty that they are a hit! The perfect appetizer for a thousand occasions! Small and easy to serve, an ideal finger food for both an aperitif/buffet or during dinner as an appetizer.
Choosing to fill the pizza rolls with marinara makes this delightful pastry enjoyable for both vegetarians and vegans. Additionally, even those intolerant to gluten can make these pastries using a gluten-free pizza crust.
The marinara pizza is a typical Neapolitan pizza topped with tomato, garlic, oregano, and oil. It is the simplest pizza of all but also very tasty, much loved in southern Italy. According to a ranking, after the Margherita pizza, the second place goes to the marinara.
With simple and affordable ingredients, which most of you will undoubtedly have at home, you can prepare truly delicious pizza dough pastries!
Furthermore, they can be customized and filled in a thousand ways. I chose the most affordable and quick option, but we can enrich the pizza rolls with cold cuts, cheeses, vegetables, etc.

- Cost: Very Affordable
- Rest time: 30 Minutes
- Preparation time: 5 Minutes
- Portions: about 10 pieces
- Cooking methods: Electric Oven, Air Frying
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All Seasons
Ingredients
- 1 roll pizza dough
- A few tablespoons tomato sauce
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- salt
- olive oil (two tablespoons)
- garlic (a couple of cloves)
Tools
- Baking Sheet
- Pizza Cutter
- Tray
Steps
First, unroll a rectangular pizza crust, ready on a work surface.
Fill the entire surface with a few tablespoons of tomato sauce, garlic cut into very thin slices, and plenty of oregano.
Leave about an inch free around the perimeter. Season with olive oil and adjust the salt.
At this point, just roll starting from the longer side. Make sure to create a tight roll.
Use the parchment paper that wrapped the roll to help and seal the ends like a candy!
Do not worry if some tomato sauce or oil leaks out during this process, it’s normal 😉
At this point, place the roll on a baking sheet, but a paper tray that fits in the freezer works just fine.
This step will help to achieve more defined rolls when slicing, but it’s not mandatory. If you’re as meticulous as I am, I recommend it; otherwise, proceed right to slicing.
Let it rest in the freezer for at least 30 minutes (even better, an hour). Once the time has passed, take the roll out of the freezer.
With a sharp knife, slice the roll into pieces of your desired size.
In total, I made ten! If you wish, you can buy two pizza rolls if you need to double the quantities.
Place the pizza rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, trying to space them a little.
All that’s left is to bake the tomato pizza rolls in a preheated oven, static mode, at 356°F for about 20-25 minutes.
Fan mode is also fine, but I recommend lowering to 338°F and checking after 20 minutes.
If you prefer to cook them with an air fryer, in case of double resistance on the lower rack at 410°F for about 13 minutes. With single resistance always on the lower rack, about 15 minutes at 392°F.
Since, as I always emphasize, every oven/air fryer has different cooking times; always do a check.
Once ready, remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and then serve these delightful tomato pizza rolls!
I hope you enjoyed this idea! Let me know in the comments if you try it! Until the next recipe!

FAQ
Can I use puff pastry or shortcrust pastry instead of pizza dough?
Absolutely, but you’ll get rolls with a different texture. With puff pastry, they will be lighter and crisper, with shortcrust pastry more compact, and with pizza dough softer. Excellent in all versions, the choice is yours based on your taste!

How long do pizza rolls keep?
Freshly made and eaten, they are definitely tastier! At most, cover them with plastic wrap, and the next day heat them for just a few seconds in the microwave.

How else can I fill these pizza rolls?
You can use cooked ham, mushrooms, and smoked provola. Grated zucchini and cheese for a vegetarian version. Porcini and smoked provola, or salami and mozzarella. Four-cheese, etc. Since we are using pizza dough, feel free to fill it however you like, thinking of your favorite pizza flavors!

If I want to make my own pizza dough, which recipe can I follow?
Here is my homemade pizza recipe. The indicated quantities are larger, so choose if you want to halve them (in total, you will need about 400 g of pizza dough). In the recipe, you will find even three different amounts with brewer’s yeast, one for those always on the run, one for those who prefer long fermentation, and finally, for those who prefer refrigeration fermentation.
