  • Difficulty: Very easy
  • Cost: Very cheap
  • Preparation time: 20 Minutes
  • Portions: 6-8 people
  • Cooking methods: Stovetop
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients

  • 18 oz Strawberries
  • 7 oz Ladyfingers (approximately, or pavesini)
  • as needed Milk
  • 2 teaspoons Sugar
  • as needed Lemon juice (a few drops)
  • 2.5 cups Whole milk
  • 1/2 cup All-purpose flour (or corn starch)
  • 4 Egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 Lemon zest

Tools

  • Bowls
  • Whisk
  • Saucepan
  • Baking dish
  • Sieve
  • Spatula
  • Heat the milk over low heat and add the previously well-washed lemon zest. Whisk the egg yolks with sugar until you obtain a yellow and frothy mixture.

  • Then add the sifted flour and a couple of tablespoons of the heated milk, mix immediately and well just for a couple of seconds, then pour the entire mixture in a thin stream into the saucepan (the milk should not be boiling but well warm).

  • Remove the lemon peel and stir at length with a kitchen whisk until you obtain your cream. IMPORTANT: as soon as the cream starts to boil, remove it immediately from the heat.

  • Pour the cream into a container (choose ceramic containers, not plastic), cover with cling film to prevent a skin from forming on the surface, and let it cool.

  • While the cream cools, wash all the strawberries well and cut them into pieces, put them in a bowl, add just a few drops of lemon, a couple of tablespoons of sugar, stir, and let rest for at least 20 minutes.

  • After the resting time, pour a glass of milk into a bowl and add the strawberry maceration juice. Make a layer of cream in a baking dish, then soak the ladyfingers and create the first layer.

  • Spread some tablespoons of cream on top and decorate with some chopped strawberries. Create the second layer of soaked ladyfingers in milk. If the soaking liquid is not enough, simply add more milk as needed.

  • Spread the cream on top and then garnish with strawberries. Continue in the same manner until you finish the ingredients. Let rest in the fridge.

  • There you have it, your delicious Dessert with Ladyfingers, Cream, and Strawberries is ready to be enjoyed, an economical dessert, beautiful to present and super delicious! Until the next recipe.

Notes

  • What can I use instead of ladyfingers?

You can make this dessert using Pavesini or any dry cookies you like. It’s also great with sponge cake.

  • What can I use instead of strawberries?

If you still want to prepare a fruit dessert, you can choose your favorite seasonal fruit! Blueberries, peaches, raspberries, cherries, pineapple, etc. Or make a version for true sweet-tooths with chopped nuts and dark chocolate flakes between the layers. It’s also excellent with shredded coconut. Alternatively, instead of classic cream, you can make chocolate cream (just add 80 grams of dark chocolate to the freshly made cream, it will melt in a few minutes and you will have a delicious variant).

  • How long can this dessert last in the fridge?

You can keep it in the fridge for about two to three days or, to avoid unnecessary waste, freeze it and enjoy it little by little, even as a semifreddo.
