Spicy Tofu Bites

Spicy tofu bites, an alternative second course. Tofu is a soy-based food obtained by coagulating soy milk and pressing it into containers. It is 100% plant-based and does not have a particular flavor, rather it is quite neutral, but when cooked with other foods, it absorbs and takes on the same flavor. Positive things about tofu: it contains no cholesterol or lactose, as it is completely plant-based and gluten-free, but above all, it is fat-free. Other positive things: it is a source of proteins, iron, calcium, and magnesium, vitamins such as B group, and a good amount of antioxidants. Ideal for preparing soups, grilled, au gratin, but also desserts. We also have a downside: for those with thyroid problems or soy allergies, it could interfere with thyroid function.

  • 6.35 oz tofu
  • 0.7 oz cornstarch
  • 1.76 oz corn flakes
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp spicy paprika
  • 1 pinch pepper
  • 1 tsp salt

Tools

  • Baking Tray
  • Parchment Paper

  • Fork

Steps

  • Cutting the tofu is optional, you can choose to make it into sticks or small cubes like I did, which is convenient for an appetizer or starter.

  • In a deep plate, place the oil with the spicy paprika. I used the fryer, salt, and pepper.

  • In another deep plate, the corn flakes.

  • In a deep plate, prepare it with cornstarch.

  • Now start coating the tofu with cornstarch, making sure it adheres all over.

  • Turn the tofu several times until all the corn is absorbed.

  • Mix the paprika seasoned with salt and pepper into the oil with a fork.

  • Coat the tofu, already with cornstarch, in the oil.

  • Make sure all the tofu is evenly soaked with oil.

  • Slightly crush the corn flakes with your hands to reduce some into smaller crumbs.

  • Bread the tofu with the corn flakes little by little.

  • And here they are ready to be cooked.

  • I used the air fryer for cooking. Arrange them like this on parchment paper in the fryer at 356°F for 15 minutes, the time to make them golden.

  • Here they are ready for an appetizer, finger food or vegan starter ideal for everyone.

  • Here they are ready, the spicy tofu bites

in cucina con pina

My name is Pina, and my passion is food and cooking in general. On the blog, I focus on regional dishes like those from my birthplace, Sicily. I also feature dishes from Lazio, the region that has hosted me for over 40 years, but in general, I cover all Italian regions. Traveling and exploring is my second passion, so I couldn't leave out dishes from around the "World" on my blog. My blog is divided into simple and essential sections like appetizers, first courses, main courses, side dishes, bread and leavened products, jams and preserves, wines and wineries, and of course, travels. Desserts are included, and finally, there is a dedicated corner for gluten-free options. Easy recipes, explained step by step and always updated.
