Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 tbsp milk

Steps

  • In a large bowl, mix the yeast with the slightly warm milk and a teaspoon of sugar. Let sit for 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  • Add the flour, remaining sugar, salt, eggs, grated lemon zest, and vanilla extract to the dough. Mix well.

  • Add the softened butter and knead until you get a soft, smooth, workable dough, adding some flour if needed.

  • Make a rectangle with the dough and turn the short side toward you, bringing one short side toward the center and covering with the other short side.

  • Place the dough in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rest until it doubles, about 5-6 hours; the resting time varies based on the weather, whether it’s cold or warm.

  • Once risen, divide the dough into 8 pieces, make balls and arrange them in a 9-inch pan lined with parchment paper, forming a ring by placing them in a circle.

  • Brush with a mixture of egg yolk and milk and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 15 minutes.

  • Remove from oven and brush with honey, then fill the individual balls as you prefer.
