NEAPOLITAN FRIARIELLI in a pan, a simple and tasty side dish of pan-cooked greens, perfect to accompany meat or fish, also great on pizza or in a sandwich.
The Neapolitan friarielli are the inflorescences that develop from the turnip tops plant, it’s the young sprout of the turnips, they are not turnips, they are not broccoli, they have a very different taste and smell, they are very bitter and are strictly eaten fried, in a pan.
Although part of the same plant, the Neapolitan friarielli are different from turnips, they have a strong and acrid smell, I recognize them this way, it is easy to confuse them with turnip tops especially when you buy them at the supermarket, they are turnips sold as friarielli or anyway they don’t have a flavor.
They were mainly grown in the Vesuvius area where the soil is rich in minerals due to the volcanic origins of the area, but it is a plant that adapts very well, especially to winter temperatures, so it can be found throughout Campania.
