Christmas is approaching and here in Germany, by mid-November, cookies are already being prepared. I’d say I’m quite late if I observe German traditions. But since most of my blog readers are Italian, I’m still on time. Today I want to offer you the swirled cookies or swirl which in English means spiral. I’ve made a very easy version of these cookies that with a trick become even cuter. But now let’s see together how to prepare them in the following recipe.
- Difficulty: Very easy
- Cost: Very cheap
- Rest time: 1 Hour
- Preparation time: 20 Minutes
- Portions: 40
- Cooking methods: Electric oven
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: Christmas, All seasons
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter (cold)
- 2/3 cup powdered sugar
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- to taste vanilla extract
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (for the dark part)
Steps
The preparation of these swirled cookies is really simple: pour sugar and flour into a bowl, add the butter cut into small pieces and start kneading with your hands until you get a smooth and homogeneous dough. At this point, weigh and divide the dough into 2 equal parts, in one part add the cocoa and knead until it becomes chocolate-colored. At this point wrap the two doughs in 2 sheets of plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 1 hour. Ideally, it would be all night.
After this time, take the doughs from the fridge and start preparing the swirled cookies. Now form many balls of about 0.2 oz from both doughs. Now take 4 balls, 2 light-colored and 2 chocolate-colored, place the balls next to each other forming a circle, alternating the colors as you see in the photo above. With the palm of your other hand, apply slight pressure and rotate the cookie in one direction. A light spiral or a very nice marbled pattern will form.
After you have prepared all the cookies this way, place them on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper and bake in a preheated static oven at 355°F for about 12 minutes. When the swirled cookies are ready, you can dip half of them in chocolate to make them tastier or just eat them like that. They are delicious and very scenic.

Saby’s Tip…
Here’s another trick for you: if instead of 4 you take 6 dough balls, 3 light and 3 chocolate, and alternate them and proceed in the same way, you will get a more evident and defined spiral. Try it.
