Skillet-Baked Pita Bread

If you’re out of bread, no worries—skillet-baked pita bread is quick to make and delicious. It’s also known as balloon bread because it puffs up like a real balloon while cooking, which is fun to watch.

It doesn’t require long rising, although I personally let it rise for at least an hour. Let’s see how to prepare it in the following recipe.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Rest time: 1 Hour
  • Preparation time: 10 Minutes
  • Portions: 8
  • Cooking methods: Stovetop
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/4 oz yeast
  • 2 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 3/4 tsp salt

Tools

All you need is a large bowl and a rolling pin.

Steps

Start by pouring the water, yeast, and sugar into a bowl and let them dissolve and rest for a few minutes. Now add the flour, yogurt, and salt and begin to mix with a wooden spoon. Then turn the dough onto a floured work surface and start kneading until you have a smooth and homogeneous dough.

  • At this point, place the dough back into the bowl and let it rest for about 1 hour. After this time, form 8 balls of the same size and let them rest for about 15 minutes. Then, on a floured surface, roll out the balls very finely to obtain a kind of flatbread the size of your pan. I used a 9.5-inch pan. Now set your non-stick pan on medium heat (make sure the pan is perfect for this recipe).

  • Then place the bread on the pan and let it cook on each side for about 5-6 minutes. You will see the bread puff up like a balloon during cooking. Turn occasionally until it is cooked on both sides.

Serve hot as soon as it’s cooked; it’s just too good.

Saby’s Tips…

You can season your pita bread with melted butter and parsley if you like, or with oil, oregano, and salt.
