Hello!
If you follow me, you know that I have 9-year-old twin girls who share the same passion for cooking as their mom. Sometimes we play a game: the buffet lunch. I prepare various ingredients and set the dishes on the table. They unleash their creativity and create an original single dish. I let them create whatever they want as long as, by the end of the meal, the plate is empty because they know how important it is to not waste or throw away food.
It’s holiday time, and like every year, they want to make cookies with mom. Today I stepped aside and let them make them on their own. A super easy recipe that matched with their imagination made them super satisfied!!

As I mentioned, today the girls are making the cookies! I won’t do anything except give them instructions and a few small tips!
I forgot to tell you about the 3 fundamental rules:
1) main goal: let them have fun. They are the stars!
2) the cookies don’t need to be perfect, but made by them! So let them do it without being intrusive 😉
3) Let them create..they will surprise you!
Sofia chose to make the plain dough. She put on her apron and took her card. I set all the tools and ingredients on the table.
I gave her the scale and, following the numbers on the sheet, she weighed the ingredients.
She put in her bowl the flour, sugar, and salt.
She grated the lemon zest and then squeezed the juice. I advised her not to grate the white part because it is more bitter.
She weighed the butter and cut it into pieces. Initially, she tried to mix it with the flour using a fork, then she used her hands. Finally, she added the egg. She mixed it first with the fork and then continued with her hands. She couldn’t wait !!! One of the most fun parts for the girls. Maybe that’s why it’s called “making a mess in the kitchen” 🙂
She worked her dough well and formed a ball. She wrapped it in cling film and put it in the fridge to rest for about 1 hour.
Irene chose the cocoa dough. She put on her apron, took her card, and all her equipment.
I gave her the scale and, following the numbers on the sheet, she weighed the ingredients.
Flour, sugar, a pinch of salt, and cocoa powder. Then she mixed well with the fork.

While the two doughs rest in the fridge, the girls choose the cookie cutters to use and think of how to create special cookies.
Shortly before taking the doughs out of the fridge, we preheated the oven to 350°F.
They rolled the dough between two sheets of parchment paper. Since they used small rolling pins, they divided the dough into 4 parts to try to have the dough at the same thickness. I revealed the chopstick trick to them, but they didn’t want to follow it. Basically, you place chopsticks (like those used for sushi) at the two lateral ends. This way, when they roll with the rolling pin, the pressure is even, and the thickness is consistent.
They made two different doughs but also wanted to prepare cookies with both colors or even mixed.
Cookie cutters, sprinkles, lots of creativity and then everything in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 15 minutes.
Beautiful and delicious! They were happy and satisfied that we would all eat their cookies at snack and breakfast.
