Ingredients
Crispy and Embracing Apple Donuts with Puff Pastry
- 1 roll puff pastry (rectangular whole grain is also fine)
- as needed erythritol (or simple sugar or cane sugar)
- 1 egg
- 2 apples (preferably red and not too watery, like Golden or Fuji)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- as needed powdered sugar
Tools
- Air Fryers
- Air Fryer Paper
- Apple Corers
Steps
First, wash and peel the apples, remove the core if you have a specific tool or use a knife by first cutting the slices and then extracting the center. Then, place them in a bowl with some lemon juice to prevent them from turning brown.
Put the slices in a bowl and add the sugar and cinnamon.
Mix well to distribute the mixture evenly.
Take the puff pastry roll and cut strips from the long side of the pastry, 1.5 cm wide, wrap the strips around each apple slice and continue until all ingredients are used up.
Arrange the apple donuts on the baking tray lined with parchment paper
Brush the surface of each donut with beaten egg (or milk).
Dust again with the sugar and cinnamon mixture.
Bake in a static or fan-assisted oven preheated to 180°C (356°F) for about 20-25 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden and crispy.
Air fryer cooking takes around 15-18 minutes at 180°C (356°F).
Here are some tips for perfect cooking:
Preheat the air fryer for 2-3 minutes at 180°C.
Do not overcrowd the basket: cook the donuts in a single layer to allow the hot air to circulate evenly. If necessary, cook them in batches.
Flip the donuts: halfway through cooking (after about 8-10 minutes), flip the donuts to ensure even browning on both sides.
Check the cooking: every air fryer is different, so keep an eye on the donuts. They are ready when the pastry is golden and puffy.
Once cooked, let them cool slightly on a rack and enjoy these delights!
Take the donuts out of the oven, let them cool slightly, and, if you like, sprinkle them with some powdered sugar before serving.
Enjoy your meal.
Tips for a Perfect Recipe
Choose the right apples: It’s best to use apples with firm flesh that don’t crumble too much during cooking, such as Golden Delicious or Fuji. Avoid overly watery varieties.
Don’t overfill: When filling the puff pastry, do not add too many apple slices. A single uniform layer will suffice to make the donuts crispy and juicy, without the filling spilling out during cooking.
Flavor as you like: Besides cinnamon, you can enhance the flavor of the filling with other spices. Add a pinch of nutmeg, some ground ginger, or the grated zest of an untreated lemon or orange for a citrus aroma.
Curiosities and Creative Variations
This recipe is incredibly versatile! You can replace the apples with other seasonal fruits like pears, peaches, or apricots. Or, for a more indulgent version, add chocolate chips or a sprinkle of chopped almonds before rolling up the puff pastry.
An extra touch: For an even more indulgent dessert, serve them warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce. The contrast between hot and cold, and between crunchy and creamy, is simply delicious.
How to Store the Donuts
Apple donuts are perfect fresh out of the oven when the pastry is still crispy. If there are any leftovers, you can store them in several ways:
At room temperature: Store them in an airtight container or under a glass dome for up to 1-2 days. The puff pastry will lose some of its crispiness, but the flavor will remain great.
In the refrigerator: If it’s very hot or you want to store them longer, place them in a sealed container in the fridge. They will keep for 3-4 days. Before serving, heat them for a few minutes in the oven or air fryer to make them crispy again.
