Two-tone Tart My Way

Here it is, today I get straight to the point 😀 and without much explanation I’ll show you the topic of the day right away! My two-tone tart, also known as two-tone tart my way, which has lately become my favorite tart:

two-tone tart my way

For several years now I’ve been baking these two-tone tarts, decorated with random decorations, or should I say abstract, just to make it sound fancier. 😃
Decorations that, when I’m making them, are much more fun than the usual and always the same traditional stripes.
However, since they don’t always turn out breathtakingly beautiful (because artistic flair has its phases), 😄 I’ve never thought of publishing the recipe or the tutorial. Oh yes, because sometimes I get overwhelmed by the sense of shame!

But just yesterday I made this wise decision: well, tomorrow is Mardi Gras, so why not? It’s the right day for a tart like this, oh.

After all, whether they’re more or less beautiful or more or less ugly, these unconventional tarts have always been quite successful at my house, especially when my kids were younger, when they never noticed the flaws and invariably said ‘mom, how pretty!’ . Even if in reality it was more ‘mom, how strange!’ 😃🤭

I must say that now that they are no longer children, ahem, they see all the flaws (darn it)! and they often point them out and make fun of me!
But after all… who can blame them if at my age I have fun making tarts like this? 🤪

👇 Here below are some other unconventional tarts of mine 😊👇

Instructions

The instructions are really basic, and I could summarize them with: prepare a shortcrust pastry, decide on the two (or more) jams to use, decorate as you like.
But I’ll write a few more suggestions for you, maybe they can be useful. 🙂

  • First of all, prepare the shortcrust pastry:

There is no need for a specific shortcrust pastry, you can use whichever recipe you like. If you need a suggestion, you can consult my shortcrust pastry collection where you can find all the pastries I’ve published so far.

If you’re unsure and don’t know which one to choose, I’ll leave my two most classic pastries here, which are undoubtedly the most versatile and go well with jams of any flavor:

    – the my classic shortcrust pastry (an evergreen recipe)

    – the cream shortcrust pastry (that doesn’t crumble and is very easy to work with).

  • After dividing the shortcrust pastry into two halves and rolling out the base on the pan (buttered and floured or lined with parchment paper), prepare some thin rolls of pastry.

Use the rolls, more or less long depending on how they turn out, to create a fantasy design, a geometric grid, a division into sectors, basically a more or less chaotic creation, whatever your artistic streak decides 💪

Pour your preferred jam into each sector.

Here are two tarts before baking. In the first, I used blueberry jam and lemon jam. In the second, orange jam, pumpkin and apple jam, jam of… oops I can’t remember! (perhaps cranberry?), and finally in the smallest sector, bergamot jam.

  • Like all tarts, these bi-tri-quadri-colored ones can also be decorated with chopped almonds, walnuts, or hazelnuts. The nuts add that extra touch to tarts that we like.

  • However, I haven’t always photographed these tarts decorated my way. I couldn’t even find the photos of the one made for my son’s birthday (who knows if I forgot to take them or if they just disappeared!). I found this one dark photo, which luckily I had shared on the Facebook page, and which for reasons I really don’t understand seems to be the only existing photo of that birthday, which we celebrated at a pub.

Well, the decoration turned out well (of course, having to bring my quirky two-tone tart to a public place I had to make it presentable 😅), I even covered the entire border with round cookies, it was a nice decoration. But the only photo I can show you at the moment is this one:

  • In return, I found this one. A quick photo, but I’m happy to show it to you:

  • Naturally, the baking of this two-tone tart is identical to that of a classic jam tart (350°F for about 20 minutes).

I’ll leave the links to a couple of my tarts that you can refer to:

  • Note on jams: remember that not all jams perform the same in baking, some (usually those of slightly lower quality) become more or less liquid with heat, so if you’re using jams you haven’t tested before, be careful not to overfill each section and possibly create ‘division lines’ that are not too low.

  • As promised, I’m adding a new version of the two-tone tart my way. 😊

This time no abstract decorations, but rather a naive drawing, a drawing that deliberately recalls the ones I made as a child: the little house with flowers, the sun and clouds in the sky, that’s exactly how I drew it. With the only difference being that I couldn’t add the open shutters to the windows! 😃

Try to copy it, it’s very simple to make!

    Give it a try too!

  • Certainly not a design decoration 😅 that wasn’t meant to be published, but then thinking again… why not? 😃

Let’s consider it an idea, a starting point for other amazing decorations!
