Filled Puff Pastry Squares with Turnip and Cheese: The perfect quick appetizer for festive days and beyond.
Today, I’m preparing a snack with you that will solve your appetizer or aperitif with surprising speed, the filled puff pastry squares.
They are ideal to bring to the table when you have little time but don’t want to give up on taste and making a good impression with guests.
These small bites are incredibly easy and fast, but above all customizable. For my version, I chose a rustic and delicious filling…a tasty mix of sautéed turnips and creamy sliced cheese. A perfect combination for a homey and enveloping taste.
Happy cooking, Giusi.

Ingredients for the puff pastry squares
- 1 roll puff pastry
- 5.29 oz turnips, cooked, boiled
- 5 slices emmental
- 1 egg yolk
Steps for the filled puff pastry squares
Unroll the rectangular puff pastry keeping its parchment paper.
Cover only half of the puff pastry rectangle with the turnips and cheese slices. Leave a free edge of about 0.39 inches for sealing.Fold the empty puff pastry over the filling to cover it.
Seal the edges well with your fingertips, pressing carefully. You can also use the tines of a fork for a neater and more decorative seal.
Make superficial cuts with a knife to pre-form the squares. Then, brush the entire surface with a beaten egg yolk (this will ensure a perfect golden color).
Transfer the puff pastry onto the baking tray and bake at 356 degrees Fahrenheit in a preheated static oven for about 25 minutes, or until the puff pastry is well puffed and golden.
Once baked, let them cool slightly, then cut along the incisions to detach the squares.
Once baked, let your puff pastry squares cool slightly. At this point, carefully cut along the incisions to separate the bites. Serve hot or cold, they will be a guaranteed success on your table.
