The Two-tone Plumcake with Walnuts, Chocolate, and Nutella Heart is a soft and irresistible dessert, enriched with chopped walnuts, white and dark chocolate, and a delicious Nutella heart that captivates at the first bite.
It is the perfect treat for Sunday breakfast, a special snack, or to serve when guests are over: simple to make but guaranteed to have a wow effect.
Each slice is a mix of scents and textures, just the way I like it, able to make your taste buds dance at the first bite.

The recipe is none other than my yogurt plumcake with chocolate chips, modified and adapted for a two-tone dough and enriched, as I already mentioned, with walnuts, chocolate, and Nutella.

You can bake the Two-tone Plumcake with Walnuts, Chocolate, and Nutella Heart either in an air fryer or a traditional oven: you will find both instructions in the steps.

  • 1/2 cup Nutella®
  • 1 packet baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt

Tools

Recommended tools

  • 1 Air Fryer
  • 1 Electric Whisk
  • 2 Bowls
  • 1 Strainer
  • 1 Knife
  • 1 Loaf Pan non-stick 4 x 10 inches
  • 1 Spatula
  • 2 Spoons
  • 1 Toothpick

Steps

Preparation of the Two-tone Plumcake with Walnuts, Chocolate, and Nutella Heart

  • Before starting, I recommend preparing the walnuts and chocolate, coarsely chopped, so you have them ready to add to the mixture. In a large bowl, beat the eggs with the yogurt using an electric whisk.

  • Add the sugar gradually and mix until you obtain a light and frothy mixture.

  • Incorporate sifted flour and baking powder, add a pinch of salt, and continue beating with the whisk until you have a smooth and lump-free batter.

  • Add the walnuts and chocolate to the mixture.

  • Gently mix with a spatula.

  • Pour half of the mixture into another bowl, keep one aside, and to the other add the sifted cocoa and the 3 tablespoons of milk. Mix well with the spatula.

  • Butter and flour the pan, and with the help of a spoon, pour the batter alternating the white and chocolate one, forming a sort of checkerboard. Spread the Nutella in the center, leveling it without reaching the edges, then cover again alternating the two batters, pouring chocolate over white and vice versa.

  • With a toothpick, make gentle spiral movements to create the two-tone effect.

  • Baking:
    – Air Fryer: preheat the air fryer for 2/3 minutes and place the pan on the rack. Cook with bake or air fry program for 40 minutes. Check with a toothpick in multiple places not before 30 minutes. If it’s dry, it’s cooked; otherwise, continue cooking.
    – Oven: preheat to 360°F for 45/50 minutes. Always check with a toothpick, if it comes out dry, the plumcake is ready, otherwise, continue until fully cooked.
Remember with the toothpick test that there is Nutella in the center, so if it doesn’t come out dry when poking that point, it’s completely normal.

  • Leave the plumcake in the oven or air fryer with the door ajar for 5 minutes before taking it out.

  • Let it cool completely and unmold.

  • Slice it and serve. A soft, moist, and just-right plumcake, to share with whoever you want 💕

Storage, Tips, and Variations

Storage

The plumcake stays soft for several days (unless it gets eaten immediately 😁) under a cake dome or wrapped in plastic wrap.

Tips

You can adapt the pan if you don’t have a loaf pan: a round cake pan with an 8.5-inch diameter is perfect to substitute the loaf pan.
The larger the diameter, the lower the cake will be; the smaller, the taller and longer it will take to bake.

The Nutella in the center can give false signals with the toothpick test: if you poke the center and it doesn’t come out dry, it’s normal. Check the baking also at the edges and at the highest point of the cake.

Tip for optimal air fryer baking, especially with only 1 resistance (so on top): use aluminum or non-stick pans, they are the best heat conductors, avoid silicone and lining the pan with parchment paper.

Let the pan rest for 5 minutes with the door ajar before taking it out of the oven or air fryer, so the cake doesn’t risk collapsing.

Variations

Chocolate:

dark: for a more intense and less sweet result, ideal for those who love bold flavors.
– milk: perfect if you prefer a sweeter tart.
– white: gives a delicate and enveloping note, also great combined with dark chocolate.
Mix of chocolates: dark, milk, and white together

You can use chocolate bars or chips

Nuts

Use walnuts, hazelnuts, or almonds depending on your tastes, you can also make a mix based on what you have available. You can also add some on the surface before baking, for an even crunchier texture.
