Preparation of Rustic Pretzels

  • Rustic pretzels with sausages are prepared in just a few simple steps. Open and spread out the puff pastry roll, which you should have removed from the refrigerator at least 10 minutes before. Take a sausage and place it on the edge of the puff pastry, then cut rectangular strips the same width as the sausage. Each rectangle should be about 4 x 10 inches (the size may vary depending on the length of the puff pastry).
Place a sausage at the beginning of each pastry rectangle and roll it. Once the sausage is completely covered, remove the excess puff pastry and make sure the two ends adhere well. Repeat the operation with all the sausages until all the ingredients are used up.
At this point, cut all the rolls into slices about 0.4 inches thick.
Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and lightly brush them with the egg beaten with a tablespoon of water.
Bake the rustic pretzels in a preheated static oven at 392°F for about 20 minutes, until they are nicely golden.

Tips

You can sprinkle the pretzels, after brushing them, with poppy seeds or sesame seeds to make them even more appetizing.
The sausages can be replaced with cooked ham, cheese, tuna, or, for a vegetarian version, with spinach.
