- Difficulty: Medium
- Cost: Economical
- Preparation time: 15 Minutes
- Portions: 22 cm mold
- Cooking methods: Stovetop
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All seasons
Ingredients
- 3 cups milk
- 9 oz ladyfingers
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3.5 oz white chocolate
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 lemon peel
- as needed milk (to soak the cookies)
Steps
The ladyfingers and custard cake is very simple and quick to prepare; first, take the ladyfingers, quickly dip them in milk, and cut them in half, then arrange them inside a baking pan lined with plastic wrap, so that the cut side is in contact with the base. It’s okay if there are some small gaps, they don’t have to be too close.
Prepare the custard: put the milk, cornstarch, sugar, and egg yolks in a saucepan and mix with a whisk; there should be no lumps. Add the whole lemon peel and bring the custard to a boil, stirring.
Once boiling, remove the lemon peel, add the white chocolate, and let it melt completely.
Immediately pour the custard over the ladyfingers and level it well, making sure it seeps between the cookies (it shouldn’t be too creamy, don’t cook it too long, otherwise it won’t “sink”).
Let the ladyfingers and custard cake cool and then place it in the fridge to set for at least a couple of hours. Decorate it as you like; I crumbled some ladyfingers on top, but you can use unsweetened cocoa powder or anything else you prefer.
Tips:
The ladyfingers and custard cake can be stored in the fridge for 3/4 days. If you don’t want to add white chocolate, you can simply omit it. In this case, however, I recommend adding another 2 tbsps of sugar to the custard.
