The Sicilian tiramisu is a cold dessert without oven that reminds me a lot of my childhood. I’m sure you all know the biancomangiare, the Sicilian spoon dessert, similar to a milk pudding, and today, I wanted to share with you a recipe that my grandmother always used to prepare. She often made biancomangiare with a base of dry biscuits or as per the recipe, with ladyfingers dipped in coffee, like a tiramisu. I love it! The Sicilian tiramisu is delicate, fresh, and creamy, one spoonful and it will be love at first sight, it will win you over at the first bite!
- Difficulty: Easy
- Cost: Cheap
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Portions: 8 People
- Cooking methods: Stovetop
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All seasons
Ingredients
- 10.6 oz ladyfingers
- 8.8 oz coffee and milk (to taste, for soaking)
- 5.3 oz sugar
- 3.5 oz cornstarch
- 4.2 cups whole milk
- 1 lemon peel
- to taste vanilla
- to taste unsweetened cocoa powder
Steps
The Sicilian tiramisu is very simple and quick to prepare. First, make the coffee using a moka pot or coffee machine, you can dilute it with a bit of milk as I did to make it more delicate, or use it pure.
Prepare the biancomangiare: dissolve the cornstarch in 1 cup of milk, taken from the total, making sure there are no lumps.
In a saucepan, place the remaining milk, sugar, lemon peel, and bring to a boil while stirring. Remove the lemon peel and add the milk with the cornstarch, continue cooking for 3-4 minutes.
Spread some biancomangiare on the bottom of a baking dish, dip the ladyfingers in coffee (or milk and coffee) and form a first layer. Add some biancomangiare, a sprinkle of unsweetened cocoa powder, more ladyfingers, and continue like this until all ingredients are used up.
Finish the Sicilian tiramisu with a nice sprinkle of cocoa and place it in the fridge to rest for at least a couple of hours, so it will settle and cool well.
Notes:
The Sicilian tiramisu with biancomangiare can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days. If you’re making the dessert for children, you can soak the ladyfingers only in milk.
