Tropea red onions in sweet-and-sour sauce, Grandma’s recipe for an easy , quick and tasty side dish and an original appetizer. If you have red onions at home, this is the quick side dish for meat, fish and cheeses that you absolutely must try, but I assure you they’re also great on bruschetta and will make you look good at barbecues! If you’re Sicilian, you surely know the sweet-and-sour onions from the sandwich truck; these are very similar — actually much, much tastier! To make sweet-and-sour red onions in a pan you’ll need red onions (preferably Tropea), salt, oil, white wine or apple cider vinegar and sugar, which I suggest you replace with honey for an even more delicious flavor. Let’s go to the kitchen and prepare this delicious vegetarian recipe, but first remember that if you want to stay updated on all my recipes you can follow my Facebook page (here) and my Instagram profile (here).

Preparation of sweet-and-sour red onions
Peel, rinse and slice the red onions. Gather them in a pan, add a good drizzle of oil and pour in a little water. Season with salt and cook over medium heat on the stovetop, stirring often, until they become soft. Pour in the vinegar and the honey or sugar and wait for it to evaporate; let the liquid reduce until it has mostly evaporated, then turn off the heat — you’ll see the vinegar gives the onions a nice purple color. The sweet-and-sour red onions are ready to be enjoyed, and they’ll be even better after a short rest!
Storage and tips
Store the sweet-and-sour red onions in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days, well sealed in an airtight container.
