The Tuscan Valdostana with puff pastry is uniquely delicious… With the flakiness of puff pastry. Inside: tomato and cooked ham; instead of mozzarella I used processed cheese slices.
The valdostana is great as an appetizer, for a snack or breakfast, as finger food for birthdays and parties, or simply to eat instead of pizza or bread.
- Difficulty: Very easy
- Cost: Budget-friendly
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Portions: 8 people
- Cooking methods: Oven
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All year round
Ingredients
- 2 rolls Rectangular puff pastry
- 1/4 cup Tomato purée or crushed tomatoes
- 5 oz Cooked ham
- 5 slices Processed cheese slices
- 1 Egg yolk for brushing
- to taste Salt and oregano
Preparation
Let’s see how to prepare the valdostana. First, roll out the puff pastry and prick it with a fork. Spread the tomato on top, season with salt and add oregano, then place the cooked ham and the cheese slices on top, leaving the edges free. Take the other sheet of pastry and cover the filling. Seal the edges first by pressing with your fingers, then help yourself with a fork to crimp them. Beat the egg yolk and brush the puff pastry. Put in a preheated oven and bake at 356°F for 15–20 minutes or until the desired golden color is reached. The valdostana is ready to be served.
Notes
The valdostana is excellent eaten warm, but the most indulgent will also enjoy it cold… and the next day it is fabulous.

Can it be made vegetarian?
Absolutely yes — just omit the ham. You can easily make it with only tomato or together with mozzarella.
