HOW TO TOAST HAZELNUTS

in

Today I want to explain how to toast fresh hazelnuts, it’s really very easy and also quick. My husband loves hazelnuts and everything that can be prepared with them; unfortunately he is allergic to birch and cannot eat certain related foods such as apples or fresh hazelnuts. However, we discovered that if we toast the hazelnuts or bake the apples the allergic reaction does not occur, so we started to toast the hazelnuts, which he loves very much. With 500 g of fresh hazelnuts (about 1.1 lb), or with 500 g of whole hazelnuts, removing the shell we obtained about 200 g (≈7.1 oz, about 1.5 cups) of kernels. I suggest you also take a look at Verona Russian cake with hazelnuts Banana and hazelnut loaf Hazelnut shortcrust pastry Nutella and hazelnut tart and also other recipes for how to use hazelnuts — you’ll definitely find some recipes to try. Now let’s see how to toast hazelnuts and if you try it let me know. Barbara

  • Now I’ll explain how to toast hazelnuts perfectly: using a nutcracker, break the hazelnut shell and collect the kernel inside a plate; continue until all hazelnuts are shelled.

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the shelled hazelnuts on the sheet, arranging them and spreading them out slightly with your hands.

  • Preheat a conventional oven to 392°F and when it’s hot place the baking sheet inside and bake for 8 minutes. After 8 minutes, remove a hazelnut and check if it is dry and toasted; if necessary you can continue for another 2 minutes but no more, otherwise you risk over-toasting the hazelnuts and making them too bitter.

  • After toasting, remove the baking sheet from the oven and let them cool; please do not cover the sheet and do not transfer them to another container such as a plate or bowl. If you cover them or pile them up they will absorb moisture and will not become crisp.

  • When the hazelnuts have cooled you can store them in a jar or in a bag.
