Pomegranate Juice

In this recipe I offer two methods to obtain the pomegranate juice.
The pomegranate, often mistakenly referred to in the masculine as “melograno” like the plant that produces it, is a fruit rich in healthful properties for our body. An excellent ally against cholesterol and diabetes, it is rich in antioxidants and vitamins that protect the body and help counteract cellular aging.
So consuming pomegranates is not only enjoyable for our taste buds, but also very beneficial for our health.

pomegranate juice
  • Difficulty: Very easy
  • Cost: Low cost
  • Preparation time: 5 Minutes
  • Portions: 2
  • Cooking methods: No-cook
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: Autumn, Winter

Ingredients

  • 2 7/8 cups pomegranate arils (about 18 oz (500 g))

Tools

  • Juice extractor
  • Citrus juicer

Preparation

  • The first method to prepare pomegranate juice uses a juice extractor.
First, cut off the crown of the pomegranate (the top) and then score the skin to form 4 segments. Take a bowl and, carefully, let the arils fall into it. You can help by gently tapping the peel with a spoon. If some arils remain trapped, finish removing them by hand.
Be careful to remove any pieces of the white pith, which are bitter. Then transfer the arils to the extractor and turn it on to collect the fresh juice.
With this method you will obtain most of the pomegranate’s nutritional properties and it will not be necessary to strain the juice.

  • The second method uses a citrus juicer: it is simpler and faster, although it results in a slight loss of some of the fruit’s nutrients.
First, remove the crown and cut the pomegranate in half.
Use the citrus juicer just as you would with an orange, pressing the fruit until you extract all the juice. Once ready, strain it through a fine sieve to remove any peel fragments or seeds that may have passed through the grating.
Pour the juice into a glass and enjoy it immediately, fresh and natural.

Tips and storage

It is advisable to consume pomegranate juice immediately after preparation or keep it in the refrigerator for a few hours.

If you want to store it longer, you can freeze it: it will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months without losing too many of its properties.
