Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup butter (cold and cubed)
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tbsp baking powder (for cakes)
- 1 cup hazelnut spread (or others as desired, pistachio, jam, creams)
- as needed sugar sprinkles
- 1/2 cup sugar
Steps
Imagine a Sunday afternoon when you wake up with the oven warming the kitchen. Maybe it’s raining outside (just for the cliché), and there you are, hands in dough and Nutella mysteriously disappearing by the spoonful. This dessert is not only delicious, it’s a comfort, to unplug your mind a bit or to bring everyone together at the table.
1. Place the flour in a mound on the work surface or, as I do, in a large bowl, add the butter and baking powder, and mix with your fingertips until you get a sandy mixture.
2. Reform the mound and add the eggs and sugar and continue kneading until you get a soft and smooth dough.
3. Roll out the dough on a sheet of parchment paper to a thickness of 1/2 inch.
4. Spread the Nutella from the center leaving 1 inch from the edges so that when we roll it, it will not overflow.5. Roll up gently, using the parchment paper to help, like a jelly roll.
6. Brush the surface with a little milk and sprinkle with the sugar sprinkles.
7. Bake in a static oven at 350°F for about 30 minutes, until golden brown.
8. Once ready, let it cool slightly and serve in slices.
This Marche-style Nutella cake looks like a pie disguised as a cake and has only one flaw: it disappears too quickly.
Perfect for breakfast, a snack, or to console yourself after burning the roast.
Storage: It can be kept in an airtight container at room temperature for 4-5 days.
Notes:
You can replace Nutella with jam or custard.
Add some lemon or orange zest to add scent.
For an even more ‘melt-in-the-mouth’ version, use some rice flour.
Serving: Serve it in thick slices for breakfast, accompanied by a hot beverage. It’s also great cold!
